96RAF
As shown in The Engine Shed about how new locos are sent from the factory as 'kits' for assembly and evaluation by Hornby, is it a possible future marketing venture for Hornby to produce kits so that people could build their own locos, coaches, wagons, etc at a sensibly cheaper cost than a factory build loco, etc.
poliss
Been done. Weren't good sellers so I hear. See http://www.tri-ang.co.uk/CKDInd.htmDoubt if they'd be cheaper as they'd have to have a seperate production line to pack the parts. Also different packaging etc.xxx to you to. :-)
Hairy
I have a kit built Princess Elizabeth (R50).I remember my dad building it in late sixties.(if I remember correctly). It would be nice if Hornby re-introduced kit locos

96RAF
Here's a link to the Princess Elizabeth kit. http://www.hornbyguide.com/item_details.asp?itemid=823 Interesting how the price went up from 45 shillings (2 pounds 25 pence) to 70 shillings (3 pounds 50 pence) in 5 years. (20 shillings to the pound sterling). Sorry no pound sign on my greek keyboard.
Hairy
Just looked and a rtr Princess Elizabeth in 1961 (unable to find a loco in the same date range) was 69/6 (£3.471/2) so the kits were a fair bit cheaper than rtr.I don't know how this would translate to current manufacturing/production/marketing methods, but I would buy a kit,
