  1. until you've proven it works with your two point motors I'd run wire from both motors into and only match them up at the port on the 6010.


    i couldn't get two hornby surface-mounted point motor to work from the same port on a 6010 but i could get them to work separately - so doing it this way gives you the option of changing from one port to two if they don't work out.

  2. Anyway that was not the point I was making. I was just wondering why the need for the user to "ok" such permissions, which is pretty standard when downloading apps that require such permissions, is being used as an excuse for the non-release of the Android App

     

     

     

     

    Well, I just had a productive weekend talking to an app developer whose app was failing to connect to bluetooth because the version of bluetooth stack installed on my android 12 phone appeared to have different android-permission requirements to the version of bluetooth stack installed on his android 12 device, so that my device needed an extra permission requested by the app. *Thats* that sort of issue you can get with Android and can't measure until you have a significant number of different devices to test against.

     

     

     

     

  3. Personally I feel you'll be disappointed in the size of the HO Flying Scotsman.

    The HO model is quoted at 245mm and the Hornby OO as 291mm. That's five centimetres of difference in length. add some OO coaches behind it and it may seem a little out of kilt..

  4. Well, they have wireless controllers for Scalextric; in fact a lot of this tech seems to have been trialled on Scalextric before taking the plunge into Hornby.

    So I wouldn't rule out a hardware "throttle", but as we've said, fitting it with a lot of switches would probably hike the cost per unit up too far; but a throttle with a couple of buttons for train selection wouldn't be out of the price bracket.

  5. off topic but "the loft hatch open," bit worried me.


    I was under the impression that a loft that has "permanent use" (such as running a railway) is bound by building regs to have (a) a large quantity of window area (b) stairs. Something about Fire regulations.


    Willing to be wrong/willing to learn these regs are not countrywide, but I know from the neighbour's loft conversion that there's a big different between a loft to throw junk in and loft to work rest and play in.

  6. I do find the customer services people very helpful on the other end of the phone every time I ring them up to complain that I received my pre-orders at the same time (and often in the same box) and paid multiple postage fees. They have always refunded the extra postage costs to me; to date.


    It'll be nice when the website and fulfilment services coordinate enough not to charge us in the first place.

  7. My Easterner turned up and i'm happy wity what I've got, however I feel that hornby have missed a trick and should have included a "dummies guide" to the train set; something like you'd get in a Kato starter set, for instance.


    I think a short document (2 or 4 sides of A4 would be enough) that tells a NEWBIE how to put it all together would really go down well with the target market. I know there are guides on the internet, but if I got a box for Birthday or Xmas I'd want to be putting it all together first, not googling for someone's help.


    I think a document sorta like this would be a good idea (just a suggested outline here):

    Show how to attach the controller to the track. (Point to other doc for health-and safety details).

    Describe how to use the controller. Show photo’s with arrows on showing the dial being moved and the train taking off.


    Detailing the train and coaches

    Talk about the detail packs for train and coach. Mention that you want to leave these off for now 😊


    Next steps

    Describe buying/running more coaches. Talk about other trains.

    Talk about the Trackmat and the extension packs (mention that you’ll need a second controller and up-sell to the HM2000 / HM6000 / HM7000)

    Mention buildings and other scenic accessories. Show a track mat full of buldings, trees, people and vehicles.

    Getting help

    Talk about the Hornby website. Include the phone number/email address for customer support.

    Describe the wealth of online information about railways.

  8. I post little videos on You Tube, mostly to show friends and family what I've been up to recently. Normally each of the videos gets three or five views and that's that. It's not like I'm trying to become Peter Strains or such like; not with a total of eight subscribers I won't.


    But strangely the video I entitled "Class 91 For The Fallen + mk4s" has gained over 270 views! For me this is like being some form of Internet sensation and is vaguely unnerving.


    (I won't link to the clip, that would be cheeky and would further distort this)


    I assume it's the title drawing people in, but is it really *that* enticing? Any suggestions on how I've managed this (relatively enormous) feat of Public Approval?

    Figures and scenery designed for 15mm wargaming (a reasonably popular scale with wargamers internationally) will be usable for tt:120. Sarissa Precision are one firm I can point to that make buildings (well, laser-cut-wood kits) that would be very suitable on a tt:120 uk layout.

  10. I was concerned that the subtotal and totals were the same but Hornby have confirmed at their end that the discounts can be seen on the orders, as for the postal charges I'm willing to wait and see what happens as 3.95 x 11 items is a high postal charge.

     

     

    On pre-orders, this has happened to me a lot that they "forget" to discount the postage, and then when the orders arrive on the same day from the same courier (sometimes packed in the same box sometimes not) I've then phoned them up and they've refunded the postage.

    Basically the web store and its backend systems don't deal very well with pre-orders at all and you are wise to keep your eye on all the packing slips you get..

  11. I miss the "Arriving Soon" section that used to be on the Hornby website.

    It was a (semi-)regularly changing section that helped salivate the wallet, reminding one of things that had been announced months/years ago but were now On The Boat (as it were).

  12. Well, "Brighton" itself wasn't in Improved Engine Green at the time that Southern Railway coaches were painted lined olive, like those 6-wheelers, it was definitely in SR (or IoW anyway) colours.

    BUT one of the terriers ("Brighton Works") did spend most of its life in "Improved Engine Green" as you can read here:

    And it says it was that colour in 1947, the last year of Southern Railway (before BR turned it into Southern Region) *that* Terrier was in IEG and could potentially have pulled Southern Railway livery carriages. Although (i) by that time I suspect that most SR carriages would have been malachite (or at least not the pretty lined-olive of the 6 wheelers) and (ii) it wasn't being used for passenger services.

    So, if you squint and say "they haven't finished painting the word "Works" on the side" and "these 6 wheelers are leftovers that never got repainted under Bulleid" you could chance it...
