  1. Hi All, As a ten year old I had a keen interest in the Battle of Britain and remember watching the 1957 movie "The One That Got Away". I was always intrigued by the story of Franz von Werra, so when Airfix announced a re release of their excellent 1/48 109E featuring the markings of his plane, I just had to build it. It's a great kit and I enjoyed making it, so here it is, airbrushed in Humbrol enamels with a light panel wash in dark gray and exhaust staining courtesy of the soot from the tailpipe of my daughters car. It's also the first 109 I've completed without making a stuff up of it! Cheers, Stuart. /media/tinymce_upload/38dbb7f21a51308fd589e0053f44313a.jpg/media/tinymce_upload/1fda4428bf5464890d366cf822b354df.jpg/media/tinymce_upload/4da7cf167fe5489bd9c3ac3c50d7801f.jpg/media/tinymce_upload/d0ea1ed9ddeffd7591cf6b7bfe62f3cf.jpg/media/tinymce_upload/6da523733ec1d7544106d78249c988f9.jpg
  2. Hi Will, despite getting back in the hobby around seven years ago, l still get a touch of anxiety around Luftwaffe planes. I've never successfully finished one. I've had two 109's and a Ju87 end up in the bin because I've stuffed them up. It's made me more determined to get a German plane on the display shelf. I'm actually on the home stretch of building an Airfix 1/48 Bf109E and its coming together well. I just approached it all with the attitude that it's just a hobby and there's bigger things to worry about. Also l thought that if l keep plugging away, I'll eventually build an excellent BF109 . Some day! When l do, the champagne will flow and I'll post photos on the forum. Cheers, Stuart.
  3. Hello Guy, 1/32 scale is a nice size I’ll agree, and I’d say Airfix haven’t entered that section of the plastic kit market because it is already well catered for by the other kit companies. The only downside to 1/24 scale is finding display space for the finished model. Cheers, Stuart.
  4. G’day Jeff, Been pretty awful regarding the current bushfires, l can’t recall anything of this magnitude in my living memory. I’m down in Tassie and the smoke has been thick in the air here. On to more pleasant things, that is an excellent Tiger Moth. You’re a braver modeller than me tackling PE parts at 1/72 scale, I’ve tried PE at 1/48 and it did my head in! Classic old plane the Tiger Moth, but I’ll wait until Airfix do it in 1/48. My sausage fingers can’t deal with anything smaller. Cheers, Stuart.
  5. Hi, I’m on the home stretch with the 1/48 “Hasslegawa” P40e Warhawk. Anyone who has built this one will know there is a lot of filling, sanding and scribing as the fuselage halves come in about 4 parts and then there is gun inserts in the wings! I’ve lost a couple of tiny parts to the carpet monster and had airbrush issues, surprisingly, it‘s come together ok. I’m going to build the Airfix 1/48 von Werra Bf 109e next. Looking forward to that one. Cheers, Stuart.
  6. l’m led to believe that rubber mats pre cut in a standard pattern were placed on the aircraft during painting, so demarcation should be hard. This only applied to factory finished camo, any repainting in the field may have softer edges. Cheers, Stuart.
  7. Hi Mark, I’ve been back in the hobby for around 6 years and I’ve made some great looking models that sit proudly on my shelf. I’ve also had some kits that just went pear shaped and ended up in the bin. Even today, my current build ( a P40E Warhawk from a non Airfix source ) gave me no end of frustration as my airbrush started to pack it in as l was painting the thing. Keep pushing on mate because when you do have success , and you will, it’s a great feeling of accomplishment. Cheers, Stuart.
  8. Thanks guys for the kind comments. I first built the 1/24 Airfix Spitfire back in the mid 70’s as a 10 year old when l received it as a Christmas present, so this build had a lot of nostalgia. It isn’t really detailed by todays standards but it still builds into a great looking Spitfire. Thanks also to forum member Paul Brown for posting a photo of this particular Spitfire as it was in 1939 which helped me finish it as close as l could to the original machine. Cheers, Stuart.
  9. Hi, finally finished this classic old kit after 12 months on and off. The kit dates back to the 80,s. Finished in Humbrol enamels. As the decals were too old to use, the squadron codes were sprayed with Montex masks and the roundels came from the spares box. I really enjoyed this build and 1/24 scale is certainly an imposing size on the shelf. Cheers, Stuart. /media/tinymce_upload/6e819b726c4c3e4780f7a8572785f66c.jpg/media/tinymce_upload/8ec81086c5c57f50ea50ccc6595a547d.jpg/media/tinymce_upload/ff3071298c7246d7bd839b978ca76186.jpg/media/tinymce_upload/3e18e9f277aff4ce5c18a79437d371e3.jpg
  10. Thanks for the replies, l don’t have a computer, ( do everything on the phone ) I’ll send my pictures to my sons laptop and have another crack at it. Just finished the old 1/24 MK1 Spitfire and would like to upload pictures to the forum. cheers, Stuart.
  11. Hi. I’m having trouble uploading photos of my latest build but keep getting the message “the file type you are attempting to upload is not allowed “ I’m using my iPhone when trying, do l need to log on and try using a pc ? Any help would be appreciated as I’m not very tech savvy. cheers, Stuart.
  12. Hi jopres57, I’m going to start building it as soon as I finish my current project ( P40E Warhawk from another kit company) . I have decided I would follow the kit painting instructions. The most notable differences between your build and how Airfix present it is the tailplanes have no white tips and the spinner is white and RLM70 black green. Cheers, Stuart.
  13. Personally for me, as l build models for my own enjoyment a close representation of the actual aircraft is what l aim for. If it displays nicely on the shelf, I’m happy. I usually just follow the painting instructions but do like to look online at period photos of the actual aircraft. Cheers,Stuart.
  14. I have watched this movie quite a few times over the years and was always fascinated by the story. Your 109 is beautifully done. I have the recently released Airfix 1/48 kit of Von Werra‘s machine and have been researching photos of it online, and like you have found some variation in how it is presented. Again, yours is a great build. cheers, Stuart.
  15. Nice 109 Jeff, last time l built a 109 with mottled camo it ended in tears with the poor thing ending up in the bin! I even did a practice on a piece of scrap plastic that came out ok but as soon as I started spraying the model it all went south lol ! As a consequence I have still to add a Bf 109E to my Airfix display. When l do build a presentable Emil, I’ll be popping the champagne corks. Cheers, Stuart.
