  1. Thanks everyone for your replies. Regarding Chrissaf comments about the motor magnet it could be I’ve assembled the keepers the wrong way round. I’ll check again and as I have my own magnetiser it’ll be an easy fix. As with the traction magnets, I’ll check these too. I have a mixture of nickel rails and 14 steel motorised points so best to get them right. Now I know what I’m dealing with I should be able to get the old girl running again. I just love getting these old locos fixed and gracing my layout. Thanks everyone again
  2. Hi all… I have an elderly Triang Class 31 loco I brought secondhand and after servicing it runs - just. I am using service sheet 66 as reference. My question is it has 2 “C” shaped magnets in the chassis and I wondered what is their purpose? Obviously I don’t know how it’s been serviced before and so I don’t know which way up they go. Should (say) they be mounted so they “attrach” the rails or repel? Should they both be mounted the same polarity or opposite and does it matter? Or does polarity “north” go towards rails? Or have I got my thoughts completely wrong? Any help would be appreciated TIA
  3. Hi all. I know I’ve asked this before but I can’t find my original post. I’m trying to find tyco couplings for my spirit of America 1776 loco and a few rolling stock. There are some on flea bay but are all from America. does anyone know a UK supplier. I’ve tried peters spares and ledons but no luck. Thanks In advance
  4. I could re- magnetise for you. How many motors do you have?
  5. Download the free Tesla app on an iPhone and you’ll be able to measure the strength of the magnet. With the loco off rail on the bench move the phone along the length of the loco to measure. If you have a multimeter measure the resistance across each segment of the armature next to each other sp three readings. Resistance should be about 7 ohms.
  6. Thanks for your replies I looked at service sheet R251s and that’s what I have. X297 is the item I’m querying. I thought it was a resistor but seems now it’s a suppressor. I can’t read a resistance. I’m not really worried about it acting as a suppressor it’s just that I like to restore my locos as original fully operational. Is there any way I can test suppressor to see if it still “works”? TIA
  7. Hi all query for you. I have an old hornby 0-6-0 loco. during servicing I found three wires one from the smoke box one from the brush and one from the pickup terminating at a 500 ohm resistor down to chassis. But why a resistor ? I’d expect to see a capacitor? Any help would be appreciated TIA
  8. I’m looking for help please. I want to fit stay alive circuits to my old DC locos, Princess class, Britannia etc. Thinking maybe fitting stay alive components in the tender with wires connecting to the loco. I can only find info on here for DCC. can anyone help with suitable components and circuit please tia
  9. I have 2 track cleaning coaches. One is a yellow maintenance wagon with skids which have wet and dry type scourers. The other is a longer coach with a central felt pad. I’ve found both can catch where rails join and points and derail. Waste of time IMO. Others on here might love ‘um but not for me.
  10. Hi all. I’ve looked at various posts on the subject but thought I’d add to the mix! So, I’ve laid one half of my elevated 3% section running around my 8x5 layout, and now thinking if Its worth the trouble of adding a camber on my 4th radius curve? I’ve worked out a 0.6 raise on the outer rail will give me a 1 deg camber. So thinking of laying strips from say an ice cream tub followed by cork underlay and ballast after screwing down the rails. open for debate/discussion/ideas and advice. TIA
  11. Thanks for your replies
  12. Apologies if it’s been discussed before but what does anyone use for fixing backscenes? I have 2 Guagemaster back scenes and trying to avoid specialist glues. Anyone used wallpaper paste? tia
  13. If you brought the train second hand the previous owner may have tried to electricly modify the dummy in some way. If this is the case there may be a short somewhere. Dismantle the dummy to see if there’s a problem inside. Or maybe the wheels have are shorting. Does the power car work with the dummy car on the track but not hooked up?
  14. Problem is there aren’t any couplings on the loco. I’ll post three photos one on the loco, one of the chassis end and one of a wagon which has a coupler but this doesn’t fit the loco. May have to post photos separately as when I try to send together site comes up with bad gateway.
  15. Not Hornby I know but I’ve just serviced this lovely loco but can anyone tell me where I can get some couplings? Look everywhere. Better still has anyone managed to convert to standard Hornby couplings? TIA
