  1. I'm seeing an increased amount of listings / adverts that quote this; "DCC Compatible - No Socket Fitted"

Am I missing something here? I was under the impression that this description includes just about every model going? What is the point in this statement? Just so it appears when searching for DCC?

It's slightly annoying as my partner bought me a loco for my birthday which I specified needs to be DCC ready or fitted, and due to information provided on Hattons website, she purchased an old Hornby 08 which I struggled to pretend to be happy with.

  2. Just wondering if this is a topic that has been discussed before?

I am currently building my first proper layout and learning what a money pit it can be. I've found myself spending hours everyday on that popular auction site, window shopping and mentally spending money that I haven't got. As soon as funds become available they disappear again very quickly.

On the plus side, it's made me give up smoking and go tee-total (I did have an alcohol problem before). But building this layout has given me something to hyper focus on.

Anyone else feel the same? And do you think the addiction is healthy?

  3. Thanks for your reply. I understand the difficulty with steam loco's due to the fixed driving wheels but this is not the era I intend on anyway.

    Possible models I've been looking at are;

Class 395 (the more detailed one)

    Class 466

    Class 158/159

    4vep

    Class 205

    Class 170

Do you think your 2-BIL & 2-EPB would make first radius?

Anything else along those lines. I kind of hoped that with their wheel formations, they might just be able to make it round the first radius. I wish I could change to second radius but with the space I have, first radius is already on the edge.

  4. Hi all!

I am current constructing a layout of a terminus station and want to keep the era as modern as possible. The layout has a hidden reverse loop which has first radius curves as well as reverse curves.

Can anybody recommended and DMU's/EMU's that might be able to cope with this? Or even any other modern stock.

I'm not bothered about realism or overhang as the stock can't be seen in these areas, more just that the stock won't derail.

    Thanks!

  5. Hi, I am new to the forum so please forgive me if this topic has already been covered.

I've recently got back into the hobby after a good 20 years out. I am currently building a small end to end layout about 1m x 4m. The problem is that I have a slight addiction to buying full length coach rakes which obviously cannot be run on this layout. Not only that, my stock does not comply to any set period or location. I just enjoy running trains.

So I'm wondering about what rules / etiquette there is around running trains on other peoples layouts? Is the railway modelling community a sociable one in which it would be acceptable to make friends with locals and have (for lack of a better expression) play dates to run eachothers stock?

I have looked at my local model railway clubs but all seem to be obsessed with "finescale". What does that mean exactly? I'm not someone who gets too deep into the details of things. If you join a club, is it acceptable to come along and run your trains, or do you need to be bringing something else to the table?

Thanks in advance for any help!
