Enamel Wash's

It is generally recommended that you use contrasting media. For exampe - if your model is painted in acrylics an enamel wash should be used. Conversely if your model has been painted with enamels, an acrylic wash is best. This is so that the wash does not disturb the underlying paintwork.

It is often recommended to use a gloss varnish or Pledge Future to coat the model before applying the wash. In that case, you can use an enamel wash on enamel, provided that the varnish is acrylic or lacquer based. I personally use matt enamel paint with a matt (flat) clear lacquer from Model Master and then an AK Interactive enamel wash. It makes pin washing a little more difficult, but the result is still matt, whereas I find a matt enamel/gloss varnish or Future/wash/matt varnish approach often still leaves the model with a satin finish at best.
