96RAF Posted February 6, 2020 Share Posted February 6, 2020 Regardless of what you choose for ballast just make sure it is not organic or it will - rot - attract vermin - smell - and a whole host of other things. Stick with mineral products.I have used aquatic gravel crushed to the right size and also the stuff found inside expired water filters, which can vary in colour from sandy to black. I saw a company selling genuine granite ballast recently - your advised to wash it before use to get rid of the dust. Looked the same as the WS Grey 00 ballast. I have ballasted all my OO track on an 8x8ft layout with 2 circuits and many sidings with a medium sized bag of N gauge ballast and it didn't weigh very much at all. Bulleidboy Posted February 8, 2020 Share Posted February 8, 2020 Most "suppliers" do several sizes, be it small, medium and large or N, 00 and 0 gauge. A couple of bags (you might want to mix it) don't weigh a great deal - not enough to cause a problem. I really can't see any reason for looking for an alternative.
