Pendolino problems

I purchased a used Hornby Pendolino Digital.
It failed to start even on full power and would eventually only move if given a push. Upon acceleration it was very jerky or stopped and would only move if pushed again. It is also noisy.
The rear bogie on the power car takes power from the track. Upon inspection and using a 9v battery on the rear wheels both front and rear wheels turned but when the battery was applied to the front wheels on the power bogie they remained stationary indicating that they were not taking power to the motor. Both wires (brushes?) are making good contact with the wheels.
Also the lights flicker suggesting intermittent power pickup.

Any ideas what the problem may be?

There is a fairly common problem with the wires from the pickups breaking, sometimes inside the insulation or at the solder joints. HTH.
