Can a non dcc loco have a smoke unit

i dont yet have the money to invest into dcc. and im a big fan of smoke units but i dont yet have one my self, and i was wondering if i could get a non dcc loco with a smoke unit?

The early Triang/Hornby Dublo locos often had smoke units. Try pulling a few service sheets on Hornbyguide.com to see how they were wired.

Be warned, though - if you weren't already aware - that

a) they make an awful mess on you layout

and

b) if allowed to run dry, they can burn out. They have also been known to get so hot they melt the plastics of the loco bodyshell.

Also, depending in what controller you have, they might keep tripping the overload cut-out.

I remember reading an artical in a US model rail magazine on an ultrasonic vapour generator using water and no heat.

 

I cannot remember much more about it as I was not really interested in making my trains smoke.

 

Perhaps someone else on the forum has heard about this.

I have a triang loco, fitted with smoke unit, and a recently purchased Hornby one, also, with smoke. Both are DC, and perform superbly.   I am looking at the US one, with interest, having not heard of it.    I would say, mine run, with no mess, and smoke  very realistic.

I've not seen the ultrasonic mist unit that Fireman mentions - in OO model sizes.

They are common in larger versions, though, often used as fake smoke generators in gas or electric fires (of the room-heating variety), or fog makers for table decoration waterfalls, etc.

thanks for all your help but ive decided to save me all the trouble and slowly upgrade my layout and collection to DCC
