Flying Scotsman, R3627 & R1082.

Recommended Posts

Hi All, Just received R3627 Flying Scotsman. It has the BRb Blue Livery.

Hornby has produced this locomotive before in the same livery, It was in a Marks & Spencer Christmas set, R1082.

The set was a premier set, similar to R1038 Orient Express as well as several other mail order specials.

This set was only available from Marks & Spencer and were a very small run.At the time Hornby were producing R1074 The Master Cutler, that had another Blue A3 in called 'Prince Palatine.

Photos to show differences of the two models.

Old one had 'Doncaster' on buffer beam, not on new one. Different tender connection.

Old one had 'brass' handles on loco sides, not on new one. New one has smoke box front steps fitted, none on old one.

New one has cab doors, none on old one. Slightly different blue colour.

Hi Anglia998,  I concur, acording to the latest Ramsey guide, it does list  the M&S set as R1082A.It states that there is another set with the reference number R1082. Looking for it over the years I have never found a picture of it. On the internet the only one shown with reference R1082 is The M&S set.

According to Ramsey, the R1082 Flying Scotsman does not have 'Doncaster' on the buffer beam. The M&S set has 'Doncaster' on.

I have seen several Blue Flying Scotman over the years as loose, solo models, but never seen one without the 'Doncaster'.

May have been a set planed and then cancelled.Hornby have done that with quite a few models.

Will find the set out, and see what it says on the outer packing box, as well as the red box.The model in the picture is one of the loose ones I bought.

Do you own the complete Hornby R1082 'The Flying Scotsman' Marks & Spencer* Premier Box Set? Have you got any images please, if you opwn the complete set? Thank you in advanced.

* Before anybody asks, no, I'm not talking about Spencer from Thomas & Friends, nor am I talking about Hornby's two models of Spencer either (R9257 and R9749)!** 😆 😉 😀

** Sorry, I couldn't help myself!  😆 😉 😀

Hi Gordon, My internet has been off line for a week so I was unable to upload the photos you enquired about.

First batch of photos show the outer carton,it clearly states that the set is R1082.Also the outer sleeve box also shows the 'R' number as R1082.

The boxes in the set are in are very similar to the normal run Premier set runs i.e. R1038 Orient Express etc.

There is no label on the back of the large red box, this usually shows contents on other Premier sets.

There is a label on the top, similar to the DCC Orient Express R1073, & R1074 Master Cutler.

The track, transformer & paperwork are the same as found in other analogue Premier sets.

Will take photos of the rolling stock later today and upload.

I have no problem taking photos of Hornby items I have, but because of DIY, can only manage one item per week.

Rolling stock photos. To  go with the blue Flying scotsman were 3 LNER Gresley coaches in BR. Red & Cream Livery.

The rake included:-

LNER Gresley Corridor  1st.   E11011E.

LNER Gresley Corridor  3rd.   E12612E.

LNER Gresley brake 1st./3rd. E10097E.

All coaches have 'The Flying Scotsman' boards. All are the latest series 2 coaches dating from 2004.

Ramsey, list these coaches as R1074, in fact should read R1082./media/tinymce_upload/54624e47be6f5ebebb0ae6db5aa3bdf0.JPG
