High Fell, BR (NER) in TT 120

A few close up photos of the dock cranes I have installed on St James’ Quay. These are TT:120 versions of the 3D printed kits DAPR make. Good instructions, easy to build. I added glazing using thin plastic from packaging, Humbrol Acylic aerosol Matt Black for main structure, cabin and counterweight in Olive Drab and some weathering and rust streaks to finish. I filed a V into the roller blocks and use a dab of black tack to hold cranes on the rail. That was stripped out of Peco flexi and glued directly to the quayside surface (Das Modelling Clay) different docks had different systems, some had the crane rails buried like the railway lines, others were mounted on concrete blocks and some directly to the quayside. A lot of the reference pictures I found show the cranes with the booms locked upwards and cranes grouped together. The model is a very good representation of what appears to be a fairly standard design used or in place at most docks in UK up to 1960’s/70’s

I have made a start on the fill in scenic sections. I’m leaving an access area to allow track cleaning train recovery, just in case 🤣.

This is a quick, inexpensive and lightweight way to make easily mouldable ground. The timber is transit packing from domestic appliances, so free and ideal for this. The basic shape is aluminium mesh (face masks) don’t buy it listed for modelling, you will pay twice the price! Cuts with scissors and not as flesh ripping as chicken wire. I secure with Hot melt glue and start working to the basic profile I want. An off cut of timber makes a great spatula and you can work the glue through the mesh. Sets fast and holds securely.Clue in name… Hot Melt… HOT HOT HOT and sticky! The mesh is great to manipulate into shape. forum_image_65789c5733a0b.thumb.png.ef40a74404867f32b7ef7b48b7c16c5d.png

Day 2 of being the creator or worlds 😁 Amazon packing brown paper is an excellent modelling material that technically is free. Tear into strips for some Blue Peter/Junior School papier-mâché but this time use a 10% PVA to water soloution to well soak paper in, layer up and leave to dry. Less messy and dangerous than cutting foam blocks and ideal for involving younger modellers. Three layers should be enough to make a pretty resilient shell to take the scenery, so about halfway through. Some parts of the hobby are inescapably expensive but we can save in other areas. You can make your own mod-podge with blitzed up newspaper and diluted PVA. forum_image_6579e72ba3603.thumb.png.952577497ffead333da237bc16305adb.pngforum_image_6579e736ebe14.thumb.png.969eb06e6b1ba568ebd5d709c84dc751.png

Whilst the bark is still drying out, few more bits done to the landscaping. A bit of filler to blend the edges, a quick coat of a brown acrylic base coat, 50/50 mix pva water to start the ground cover of blended turf. Once that’s all set nicely vac up and mix in some greens to simulate shorter grass. A spice jar makes a great scatter tool 😁

The area I’m working on at moment now is going to be similar to the surroundings, valley floor with lumpy grassland and odd rocky outcrop in the middle, but more rocky on valley sides. A load more trees to make and go in. The second side is more of a surprise (including to me) and there could be aerial action too 😁

Some green blended turf has been added and excess vacuumed up, a nice patchy ground layer developing. Rocks next, laid out a few pieces of bark after some cleaning with a dry scrubbing brush and breaking up a bit, they will be be more vertical along far side when stuck in place. Bark gets a base layer of watery grey acrylic ( The Works and Hobby Craft sell acrylic paint way cheaper than model shops!) and wait till dry 😁forum_image_6582fe5e4d064.thumb.png.f259121840300cf85b7dca84f9a1907d.pngforum_image_6582fe660ff16.pngforum_image_6582fe6f2da1b.thumb.png.c1606e0ee4b01e80a9e9c447859dcbb4.pngforum_image_6582fe76be487.thumb.png.9e8edc9d2a742ef16363fe73db1adc4f.png

Thanks guys! I’m using the bark in its ‘raw’ state face on. The tree trunk I found has nice old deep knarly texture that matched the type of rock I was after. You can get a less craggy look by cutting bark into strips and using it sideways, it can be scored out a bit with a wire brush to change effect. Decorative garden bark works well too. All the big rock ares on High Fell are bark, there are a few smaller ones that were a present and stream and tarn feature stones harvested from the local stream.

Things now start to come together. The bark has been painted and different tones added (weathering powders are great here too) The rocks in the area discolour with oxidation to a dark blue grey but the ironstone leaves tell tale rusty red streaks. Once done the rocks have been glued in place with hot melt glue, edges filled with household filler. Edges are the key to making any model better, real life doesn’t have gaps. Then blend the filler with paint, and started with blends of static grass. Quite pleased with how this is developing. Still more to do 😁forum_image_658c71e7929ef.thumb.png.d42419168540cb03742143c405725ab9.pngforum_image_658c71f0653a4.thumb.png.edeeb1066961c4e633d08030ad0fa449.pngforum_image_658c71fa4a895.thumb.png.7488e0fa808b7fa3dd4733839e0ebea7.png
