TT:120 - Loco's and Rolling Stock

RDS

Recommended Posts

Hornby could take advantage of the common 1:120 scale and introduce stock which ran or is running in Britain and continental Europe, with European models marketed under the Arnold brand:

I know the class 66 and J94 Austerity are currently under development.

LMS Stanier 8F 2-8-0, WD 2-8-0, WD 2-10-0, USATC 0-6-0T, S160 2-8-0

LMS/WD 0-6-0 shunters (BR 12000s, similar to class 08s but with smaller driving wheels), including NS 500/600 class

Class EM1 (Tommy), EM2 (BR class 77, NS 1500), 86, 87 and 92 electrics

Hornby's been good at recreating Pullman and other prestige trains.

So for, there's been no Southern Railway or Region stock in TT:120.

I suggest an Bulleid unrebuilt streamlined Merchant Navy, a Lord Nelson 4-6-0 and/or a class 71 to accompany Hornby's exisiting Pullmans to model the Golden Arrow, with a gangwayed SR luggage van https://www.bluebell-railway.co.uk/bluebell/pics/gbl.html to complete the formation.

Its great to see the HST and MK3 coaches, so now you have these coaches available, have considered doing a Class 442 emu. They have worn up to 7 liveries in there life and I think would be a good seller in TT120, for starting the southern region stock.

For me it would have to be 25 and 45 top of the list with 40 & 46 next. Happy with any first-generation DMUs. Mk1s in Blue/grey and definitely more parcels and mail, maybe a CCT or GUV in plain blue. Others have mentioned the Woodhead electrics which is an interesting idea too.

Former Night Ferry stock.

Always been an issue in other scales, because of British and European preferences, but doable in TT:120.

Specially built CIWL sleeping cars, SNCF fourgon (luggage van), specially built Southern Railway luggage van

A family of related locos based on Hornby's recently announced BR Standard 2MT 2-6-0 in OO.

In combination, they worked across Britain and would widen people's ability to model secondary and branch lines.

BR Standard 2MT 2-6-0 and its tank version 2-6-2T

LMS Ivatt 2MT 2-6-0 and its tank version 2-6-2T

Variants include differing chimneys and tank locos' apparatus for working push-pull passenger trains

Liveries include LMS unlined black, BR lined black (early and late crest), BR lined green and preserved versions eg Keighley & Worth Valley Railway's Ivatt 41241 https://preservedbritishsteamlocomotives.com/41241-2/

and Ivatt 2-6-0 6441/46441 https://preservedbritishsteamlocomotives.com/46441-2/

Now that the first Princess Coronation has started to arrive, hopefully it’s not too soon to wish list an alternative variant…

Defrocked ex streamliner with tapered smoke box & split level running board in BR Blue livery!

Also +1 for a 2-6-4 tank (would prefer a Fowler but an alternative would still be purchased.)

I'm hoping both original streamlined and rebuilt versions of the Princess Coronations will become available in due course.

Hornby's produced superdetailed Fowler and Stanier 2-6-4Ts in OO, if the CADs are still available they'll be welcomed in TT too!

Hornby Dublo (later Wrenn) produced a BR Standard 4 2-6-4T in OO but Hornby will have to start afresh by measuring up one of the survivors.

I would love to see a streamlined princess coronation and a version with the smoke deflectors fitted as Atholl does not,

A smaller loco (R30271 LMS, Fowler 4P, 2-6-4T, 2300) would be a nice addition along with an LMS shunter and brake van. Of course these can also be released in BR early & late  🙂

Hornby also did a Fairburn 2-6-4.

The rebuilt Coronations will require a loco and tender body modification as the loco front footplate was cut away and had different smoke deflectors. The tenders of ex streamlined locos had a recessed back (some did if not all).

Both probably easy mods but will Hornby want to? If so then hopefully they can replicate the Dublo City of London/Liverpool models in BR maroon, they do seem to like using some past Dublo/Tri-ang names.

The night ferry coaches in Europe were too large for the UK so the company built a few specially to the BR loading gauge to allow them to run from Europe to England on the rail ferry between Dover and Calais.

A little bit more on the Night Ferry. It was a specific service between London Victoria and Paris Gare du Nord. The actual CIWL coaches and SNCF baggage vans that went on the ferry between Dover and Dunkirk were built for the UK loading gauge. Other coaches were added as part of the formation and removed/added at the port, latterly in UK these were MK1s. For my first trip to France in summer 1980 (the service ended in Autumn 1980) my eldest brother bought us first class tickets so we stayed on the CIWL coaches the whole trip, other passengers had to leave the other coaches and walk onto the ferry. Although the CIWL coach design looks similar they are different to the other services CIWL operated such as The Blue Train, Orient Express etc. I’d be very happy with any version in TT:120 😁

As Hornby via Arnold released a gorgeous Orient Express set in N for the OE anniversary last year, a lot of the CAD work is done and Orient Express in TT:120…..?100% yes please, I think it would sell extremely well in UK and the Continent and further afield to the new territories 👍
