Ratch
Today I was in Poole RNLI College with Airfix for the launch of their 1/72 kit. As I took rather a lot of pictures, I'll show them over several posts.
Ratch
Here we are in the factory where lifeboats are built from scratch and repaired.
Ratch
It reminded me of the Ripping Yarn, when Thompkinson was building a 1/1 scale icebreaker.

Ratch
The stand for the kit is similar to this transportation trolley. Here you can see the hull and superstructure before they are joined. Shannon to the fore and Severn behind

Ratch
I was astounded by the facilities at Poole, two factories, a College, a hotel/residency, Head Office, Museum and other buildings - absolutely huge, much bigger than I expected.

Ratch
Alternative schemes, if you don't like orange lifeboats. I would like to thank Sam, Rachel, Anna and all the RNLI guys who gave the excellent tour of their facilities, and answered all our questions. Of course I must thank Dale, Matt, James, and Becca for inviting us, delivering the presentation, sharing time and information about the kit and design process, and thanks for the goodies too.

Ratch
I shall post my In-Box Review here: The Shannon Class Lifeboat has been in service for ten years with the RNLI. Designed in house to operational specifications and requirements. Twenty-eight have been built to date with more in the production pipeline at the RNLI’s own factory at Poole. The RNLI kindly provided Airfix with full CAD data to assist in the design of the kit, which has been two years in the making. The life expectancy of the class is 25 years, with a further 25 years after refit. In-box Review: This is a new tool 1/72 scale kit in the Starter Set series with minimal parts count and simplified assembly. Dimensions are 190mm x 63mm and there are 54 parts. The Skill Level is one and one Flying Hour is printed on the box. Moulded on three grey runners and one clear, the detail quality is state of the art. Runner A Runner B Runner C Runner D Although the kit is simplified for ease of building, accuracy has not been compromised. The kit is made in India with packaging from the UK. Instructions are printed in a 12-page, A4 booklet over 16 steps in colour. An additional A4 sheet of tips in provided for the novice. Airfix provides reference images on the reverse of the box for paint colours and decal placements. Decals are by Cartograf, ensuring good registration, sharpness, density of colour, and unobtrusive carrier film. The markings provided in the kit are for 13-01 RNLB Jock and Annie Slater, currently at Poole. An additional sheet is available (A65005 RRP£9.99) with the names of all current boats in service (at the time of release). Paints advised: 15 Gloss Midnight Blue 18 Gloss Orange 27 Matt Sea Grey 33 Matt Black 34 Matt White 56 Metallic Aluminium These are included in the kit with two Humbrol – Airfix paint brushes; No. 0 and No. 4, plus a 5ml tube of Humbrol Poly Cement. RRP is £19.99. The kit will be on sale in all RNLI outlets (as well as traditional modelling retailers), with a donation for the RNLI too.
