Model Railway - What's your latest acquisition?

Recommended Posts

I received today another loco which is,  Hornby Rebuilt Merchant Navy R2169 running number 35028 with name Clan line. It was very sluggish and needed lots of power to even move, so spent last couple of hours (with short breaks to rest my back) cleaning the wheels on both sides. Wow quite a lot black stuff came off with cotton buds. Loco is in poor body condition but the price I paid, thisis well worth it. Just waiting for X7585 tenders chassis to arrive then I will attempt to convert this to DCC ready from tender. 20240724_204011.thumb.jpg.44346ea488e22629abf1b520d94b21a4.jpg20240724_204021.thumb.jpg.c369734fafa84f903cd7a1352a8ba852.jpg20240724_204025.thumb.jpg.86fd97c1663dd5829e40e5c792abd7a0.jpg20240724_204028.thumb.jpg.eac1d35a194d907bdfb6e4bbcb7d4339.jpg

A lot of patience is required in this hobby and I find many times I know I need to do some jobs - repairs, modifications, etc - but I know I'm just not in the right frame of mind, so I often put off some jobs 1, 2, perhaps more days until I find I'm 'calm enough' to be as careful as possible.

R3983 2007 Prince of Wales arrived into my garage - where the 'layout' is - large, but temporary, on the floor, until the house is paid off next year, then Plan A goes into force!!

When inverted in a foam 'cradle', wires to the tender, she's super smooth, nailed the gentle 'break in' forwards and backwards, then it came to running on the track.

When going around the 4th radius curves I hear that ominous 'clack, clack, clack' normally associated with misaligned rods - connecting and coupling - and possibly the odd loose crank pin, so the investigation started.

I very lightly shaped the connecting rods (those to the cylinders) - no change - still there, but no louder.

I nip up - lightly - the crank pins - no change - very little to do here, so assembly was good.

I then lightly pulled out both sliders - where the piston rods ride on - and ... SORTED!

I've managed to fill the tender and locomotive and loco body with strategically placed and shaped pieces of lead - gross weight is now 592g, most going into the locomotive body - inside the sides of the boiler actually.

The motor is an absolute gem.  She can crawl with the very best and maintain this for minutes, perhaps hours at a time!  Maxed out, she's an absolute screamer - could be one of my very fastest locomotives, which include a Pendolino and Railway grade HST!

She's already hauled my 'normal fairly heavy' 9-coach Gresley teak rake, and doesn't have any traction issues.  Power draw is very light - half power (50%), hauling that rake she's consuming ~160mA only - most Hornby heavy pacifics consume ~200mA at this power setting.

Very pleased, and now to start fitting the detailing parts - brake rigging, drainpipes, crew, lamps, etc. (I might 'gloss' the body.

Sounds as though a good clean was essential. This loco R2169 was introduced by Hornby in 2000 - a long time ago. I have three Clan Lines. R2169 was analogue, but some of the later versions of Clan Line that appeared in sets, were DCC Fitted. Superb loco's. The slight downside with the model, is that it does not have cab doors - I am thinking of making some from plasticard. The doors are hinged in the middle, and I think as with other Hornby models with doors, the angle of the two sections could be created and attached to the tender which would allow curves to be taken without the door catching on the cab-side.

Thanks @Bulleidboy for brief history of Hornby, when they made. Look forward to see you making cab doors and if you can share. I like to fix the loco because that's the best part of this hobby for me. So quite please with outcome. Regards

Another surprise, in dc mode the loco was running but every time I change direction, I notice a slight delay before loco move, that made me look inside the loco, so I remove the body, to my surprise it's fitted with decoder with proper 8 on socket as well with either factory fitted or someone else have done excellent job. As I recall this is not DCC ready model, so I checked the seller description on ebay and this loco was sold as dcc fitted. Less work for me to install dcc socket in loco body. Who ever did install dcc socket they have done as good as job as factory fitted. Quite please with this surprise. However in this condition it works with DC but not with DCC. I will ask this question in DCC section later to try to resolve this mystery.

D, I would straighten out that valvegear linkage - appearance and will avoid possibly catching on other rods when in motion - LHS.

Quick update on PoW - all detailing fitted except crew.  I didn't have to tweak any of the holes either!

One thing, I did remove the front pony truck to ensure good access to see how all the pieces slot in.  I had fitted the drainpipes first and ended up having issues fitting the front steps, so had to partially bend out the pipes (without kinking).  Once all was fitted, a quick test gave no problems at all running around my tracks.

Now for the crew.  I find the supplied crew a little skinny, so I'll see how my usual PD Marsh PDZ19 painted loco crew fit.

Connectivity between locomotive and tender has not given any issues - so far, but don't want to disconnect / reconnect too many times.

👍

Rod shape and alignments are critical in these models - as I found out with my P2.

A ticking 'clack, clack' when going around curves indicated 'interference' of some description, which could be very light, or could be catastrophic - which I've had in the past!!  Mine's perfect now and runs very well - as expected at that price, substantial reduction or not!!  It's possible I might have caused that anyway in all of the handling I was doing.

Good News

Bad News

Good News .... time.

Good News - Fox Transfers' etched nameplates arrived today - superfast service, and they look superb!!  I cut them out, trimmed them very, very carefully, without bending as well.

Bad News - I placed one where it should go, to check for sizing and alignment.  Let's just say I should have done this before - it's about 3mm too short!!  The tampo-printed plate can be seen underneath!!  Naughty words.  In fairness I simply ordered the plates and didn't think about asking if they've experience in how they size up against the Hornby ones, or more simply 'what are the dimensions'?  !!

Good News, sort of - those cheap looking Hornby plates are actually metal, but simply printed onto a piece of metal, so do look better than 'as received', but nothing like what the Fox's would have.

Never mind.

(Alternative) crew have been fitted and look pretty decent - space is restricted by the seats, but I got it to work.

2007 PoW - thoughts.

Apparently the 'latest' news wrt completion of the 1:1 P2 newbuild 2007 'Prince of Wales' is that she'll start circulating during 2027.

What are people's thoughts / experience of where the high electricity warning labels might go?

The model doesn't wear any, but I'm certain for mainline circulation, the newbuild will have to wear them.

I'm guessing something similar to 60163 Tornado:

- high on boiler just behind the chimney (both sides),

- and high, near the front of the firebox (both sides),

- middle of the bulkhead (tender) and high on the back of the tender (perhaps both sides),

- perhaps a couple low down (both sides) at the front, low down on the smokebox area?

I'm still thinking of 'glossing' her slightly (the Clan went extremely well), and thought this a perfect opportunity to place the decals and seal them in.

I finally got my new Scotsman when the kids arrived from the UK. They're off shopping later so I'll hopefully get it going on the rolling road. I'm looking forward to seeing how it performs.

Hi Bulver

The W6001B carriage is all over ebay.co.uk.  Search "W6001B Wrenn"

Bee

Hello Bee,   sorry that I haven't responded sooner, but thanks for the link to the Wrenn set, still a great-looking model.  I was sorely tempted, but as I like dcc, the Hornby set made more sense.  I have bought a 3 coach set for the 'Belle', but realise that in my haste to snap it up, I have bought a 1967 set - oops.  That will arrive tomorrow, so we will see how they sit with each other fingers crossed!

No worries @Bulver

My initial thought was that you were after the Wrenn carriages, due to my faulty comprehension of your post and your childhood dreams.  Upon re-reading your post I realized that you wanted the Hornby models and I had made rather a mess.

Whoops!

Bee

No, I may have confused the issue, your reply was very helpful, so thanks. (and I could be tempted, but as I have currently nowhere to run my sets, other than a 2metre worktop, I must curb my enthusiasm lol)

After the slip-up with buying the 1967 Brighton Belle coach set, I found the correct 1960 set of three on eBay.  They were expensive, but made an offer, which was accepted.  Now a happy chappie, got the right set to match those which used to power through my town (Horley).  If I can find out how to get decent pics on my phone, I will post them here.  I know BB gave me the details of the correct set, but by that time I had already purchased the '67 set (apologies to BB for slipping up) silly of me but I saw 196- and thought that was it-whoops.  Never mind, I will re-sell the set to help fund the 1960 set.

Not quite sure what 'naughty' word I used in the last post, if I profaned (I am sure I didn't!) then apologies to anyone offended.  It would be good to be told so that I can ensure I don't use it again

Hi all, a question to BulleidBoy, and others more knowledgeable than me, if I may.  I cannot see how to remove the bodyshell of the Brighton Belle motor car.  I have followed the instructions in the manual, but there doesn't seem to be any suitable point at which to unlock the 6 tags, and in attempting this a tiny piece of plastic has dropped off from somewhere.  It is frustrating not being able to access the decoder, as I wish to replace it with a sound chip.  So any help would be gratefully received

cheers

I bought couple of weeks ago 3 x loco as non runner, if I have known I wouldn't have bought these and save the money for Hornby Elite. Anyway here is the first one

Hornby R2225 LMS Princess Arthur of Cannaught with running number 6207. Just need cleaning of the wheel and need new drawbar with 2 wires which I have somewhere, just need to find it and replace. Loco is running lovely and could go with run in, in each direction so I will need to dig out Rolling Road as well. For under £50.00 it's worth every penny. Very very clean loco overall. Some good news after the sad news of my controller having issues.

Second loco of the lot, was non runner.  Needed full clean, especially the tender driven pickups were, way too much black stuff which took a while to clean, clean the 3 pole ringfield motor as well, loco wheel were very dirty as well but now everything is clean and loco is running very nicely. This will be going to be sold on eBay to recoup some money towards the Elite.

Third and last, but my favourite loco,  Hornby R2179 Coronation Class, 6225, Duchess of Glouchester for under £50.00 as non runner and only needed good clean for this to work. This will definitely will have X7585 chassis, sprung front bogie as well, to make it DCC ready with wires soldered in the loco for 4 pin connector. Very pleased with today's work and after bad news from yesterday about Elite, at least this has put smile on my face. I hope others have enjoy this journey with me.
