I absolutely love the Drummond 700. It looks like the model has ben devoid of the

silly "design-clever" concept. This is an early pre-production sample and yet it is immediately noticed that there is quite a bit of added detail. Looks like sprung buffers too, well atleast they are metal. The model is made from die-cast metal to give it

more weight. (Wish the LNER P2 and BR Duke of Gloucester were made like this)

As for the Mk2E coaches, I feel that they are even better than the re-tooled Mk1s. The glazing looks excellent (better than the previous attempt). Looking forward to seeing

further samples in due course. Very happy with these two models so far (seems like Hornby are slowly getting back on their feet.

I sincerely hope that their upcoming 2HAL, D16, K1 and 9F Crosti are designed to similar standards.

Cheers.

J

The 2Hal can just be seen over the top of the 700, and in one of the recent railway magazines there were pre-production shots of it and it looks at least as good as the 2Bil. I have no doubt that the D16 and K1 will be superb, and the Crosti amazing.

If

this year goes well for them I think the word 'slowly'; in Jeremiah's penultimate paragraph can be removed! The news is full of 'recovery' stories and we are supposed to be better off, so let us hope this is the watershed, and we are moving into a period of

growth for the hobby.

Thanks Jeremiah.

Article in the Times about Hornby today.

They issued a second profit warning yesterday.

They had to pay 600,000 to end contract with their Chinese producer.

Production will move to Shenzhen in Southern China.

Returning production

to UK back on agenda but to quote the Executive Chairman 'We don't want to lurch back to the UK and into a load of other trouble'.

Humbrol and Airfix Quickbuild produced in UK.

It

a half painted sample of the 2HAL. I am not sure if you saw the painted or half painted samples? But if you have then good.... Here is a few more links for other members who haven't yet seen the model.

Thanks Jeremiah, these work OK.

Looking at the engineering samples of the 2Hal it looks as though they have modelled the rather distinctive 'Art Deco' seat backs. These have a curved top above each seating position just as prototype. A very nice

touch. It will be an anxious wait until August before I can get my paws on one! (or more!!)

Are you a secret Hornby Dublo enthusiast?

I have a number of O gauge locomotives made by ACE trains. These have diecast bodies (in fact are 95% metal) and with the larger scale too are exceedingly chunky.

The B'man 'C' has a diecast running

plate which makes for a bit more traction, and the Hornby T9 has a diecast boiler, so it isn't exactly a new concept, but is a very elegant solution to the tractive effort..

I love that they're making engines from die

cast metal. It won't just improve traction but also the whole feel of the model. Exciting times!

The class 700 'Black Motor' R.3238 looks to be a most excellent model of this once ubiquitous Southern Railway goods locomotive. The model brilliantly portrays the characteristic and very upright stance of these locos.

However, the chimney 'capuchon'

troubles me not a little. While the LSWR initially fitted capuchons, they tended to disappear after the 1921 Grouping.

These capuchons were not in evidence when I was observing the Black Motors shunting the Staines up yard 1941 - 1944. I remember them

most vividly and their chimneys definitely Did NOT have capuchons.

The fact that the model is to be diecast must surely be an added bonus because of the additional adhesion weight. I hope that it is as sure-footed as my Blue-Box model of a 2-6-0 class

N that has shown itself capable of hauling around thirty wagons around the layout, without any sign of slipping.

I can recommend holding a 'Duchess of Montrose' or 'Silver King' and compare them with present day models of the same classes. The old Meccano built models are not particularly accurate to scale but are beautiful pieces of old fashioned British engineering.

They are heavy and solid and if kept lubricated and used they will run for ever. I have an ERTL 'Douglas' which I hope to convert to a 'load' to go on to a 'WELTROL' wagon.

Happy, Happy, Happy!!!!

For now I only have four 2Hals on order (I already have two made from Phoenix Kits with three more kits to make!) These, the 4Sub and the EPB series dominated Eastern Section electric services  throughout the 'steam' period.

The 700 is much less useful to me, being a South Western engine and about as useful to me as a J15 is to you. I will probably get one as it is a ;Southern' loco, but more as a curiosity. T9s and M7s occasionally found their way on to the Eastern section but the 700 never did.
