Photega
Has anybody here found a way to fit the above decoder into this shunter? I managed to attach the chip and get it responding but when I tried to fit the loco body it snapped 4 of the wires off the decoder end. :(
Graskie
Sounds as if things must have been too tight for that decoder. You probably need to check with Bachmann for a smaller one. Quite often the smaller locos have to be fitted with just 4 pin decoders.
2e0dtoeric
Did you check there was enough room for that particular chip under the bodyshell? I don't have that particular engine, so I can't offer much advice. Was that the correct chip? You might need an extra small one to fit in the space. What do the Bachmann notes say to use?Don't forget - this is a HORNBY forum, so we can't really advise about rival company products!
Photega
When i ordered Decoders I had an online chat with Hattons giving them a list of the locos I had it was they that suggested the R8249 decoder for this engine.Bachmann just say an 8 pin decoder!!! Photega
I have today got a much smaller chip, though this is only 6 pin so had to then get a 6-8 pin harness but even this doesn't seem to fit either.Think this might be one to take to a specialist to fit unless any of the good people of this forum have any other suggestions. poliss
Try a direct fit 8 pin decoder. No harness wires to worry about.
poliss
Or a decoder suitable for N or Z scales. They're usually powerful enough. More powerful than the standard Hornby decoder in most cases.

RDS
I have this Loco and a few years ago, I fitted the R8249 chip to it, right at the front, on an angle between the 2 mounting posts that were previously used to hold the original small DC board. I put the decoder in some heat shrink sleeving first, to prevent it shorting on the metal. (Incidentally, the original board must be removed first as it is not needed)I have recently needed to change the decoder and Bachmann recommended their 6 pin decoder. I have not fitted this yet but the Hornby R8249 fitted without problems in the location I described above.
choralc
What about asking Bark-man as Graskie suggested. Surely they have a number or contact email if there was no operating/maintenance sheet with the shunter?

choralc
RDS, you must have sent yours while I was typing mine. You must have found a good position for it after removing something else. I kept imagining that there must be room inside the body without removing any chassis so that wires weren't pulled off when the body was being replaced but not having that model I don't know if Bachmann filled the space with chassis to improve traction.
