  1. I was attracted by n gauge after a break of some years, and as an oldie (very) found a small layout about 6 x 4 in our spare room a very good choice. Not Hornby, of course, (wash my mouth out) but coming along quite well. Single loop with sidings branching from both sides of the loop.
  2. Basis for a cheap garden railway? Wonder what the range of the RC would be, and whether cheap plastic track is available?
  3. Chrissaf Thanks, the elink is just lying there, may as well pass it on, not very large anyway...
  4. Peter I have an unused elink you are welcome to, freebie, just the unit, presume you have your power supply and USB cables. ask the Moderator to email me your address.
  5. Hi Peter (my namesake) doubtless you will see my other reply elsewhere, can only say, don't waste any more time on it. Mine was several years old, sent to Hornby who returned it as unrepairable.
  6. After a lot of trouble with semaphore signals mechanically connected to several points, I have switched to light signals, seem much more certain and reliable...and easier to see at a distance...

    Elite burn out

Absolutely... That was the response I got when I returned mine after a failed update.

    Elite burn out

Keith Noted, I'll put it away, you never know...just mention, it worked o.k. before I tried an upgrade... Peter

    Elite burn out

Hi Rob Thanks, I have had a look inside, no signs of any burning, this does seem to indicate a serious component failure. Think I must accept that it is not remedial and dispose of it appropriately. Thanks for all you interest. Peter

    Elite burn out

Followed this with much interest. Most of you will know I have a 10 year old u/s Elite which Hornby say is not economically repairable. Wonder if any of you would like to have a look at it to see if a repair is feasible? At my expense, of course...
  11. Hello ff2nd Thanks for your interest, didn't expect to take this any further. When I plug in the power lead the green light comes on, very pale boxes show along the display, it just doesn't accept the download. The consensus is that some unit on the printed circuit is faulty. Not worth wasting any more time on it.
  12. Thanks AC et al, I've tried with my W10 laptop again today with the expected result. The Vista PC is not local and I don't think a special journey is warranted. I noted the requirements you mention in your website, i.e. removal of background apps and adjustment of privacy settings. I didn't feel I could go as far as this, not sure what damage I might do to my OS as it is set up. Did think of trying in Safe Mode, but you will know that to get into Safe Mode with W10 requires an Honours Degree in Computer Technology! I must accept this as a dead loss and put it down to experience. Anyone interested in dabbling with it as a freebie?.... Thanks for the interest you have taken.
  13. Hello AC Many thanks for your further advice. I think you have correctly identified the description which showed up under Device Manager, does this indicate a hardware fault? I will read through your posting more thoroughly, possibly try another update and if that fails, another go at HCC. Anyway, thanks very much for your interest.
  14. Thanks Rob and Chrissaf, Think I'll just give it up as a bad job! I have another controller, so not without running ability. I'll wait for Hornby to produce a proper wireless operating controller. Thanks for all your advices.
  15. Fishmanoz Thanks for your response, didn't realise I could access previous posts so easily, duly noted. My main reason for raising this again, wondered if anyone might comment on the use of Vista, and the apparent non-availability of a needed driver. I think Hornby just took the view that this is an older unit, judging by the date indication on the back, and therefor time to dump it as with most electronics when they pass about five years. Thanks for your interest, I really must not waste any more time on this, and yours, and RAFs...
  16. Not sure if I put this under this heading when I last sought advice, back earlier in the year, about the failure of my upgrade attempt with my Elite. Here is the latest. I have tried an update using my bro-in-law's PC running an old version of Vista, the Elite showed up in Device Manager - Ports as some very odd item, precise details I can't recall, but properties then showed that the item wasn't working, requiring some driver which Windows tried to find, but without success. I have spent a lot of time on this, I really think this upgrade lark is more trouble than it's worth. I wonder if anyone has other suggestions. Perhaps I should go back to Hornby again, this only arose from my original attempt to upgrade, as recommended by Hornby and this forum.
  17. Fishmanoz re previous on this subject, do I assume no response from Adam?
  18. RAF and Chrissaf Thanks, just tried 1.44, same result.
  19. RAF Thanks for your fuller advice on a dismantle, I am still trying to get the screws out, my allen key doesn't seem to do the job, do I need anything special? AC Thanks also, I may give it a try, but really fed up with the whole matter of an update, considering my unit was working o.k. before I started this lark.
  20. RAF Thanks, I'll give it a go. RDS, Willdo, but I really am tired of it.
  21. Thanks both for your latest thoughts.I shall be interested in any response from Hornby. As to opening the case to inspect or salvage, this appears to require a special tringular screwdriver. Is there any other way? I have to say, I am really fed up with this piece of equipment and am still inclined to dump it...
  22. Wasted another couple hours yesterday trying to resurrect my defunct Elite, to no avail. Was going to bin it to stop me wasting yet more time on it. Should I hang on for some sort of offer? It really is proving a dead loss...
  23. Thanks both. Think I'll persevere with this for a while, I'll report back...but don't hold your breath...
  24. AugustusCaesar Just noticed I keep addressing you as AG, sorry, mind wandering as usual...
  25. AG Thanks for your response, certainly something for me to consider. Don't think there is any point me going back to Hornby, but then I may. I'll give further updates a try, perhaps with wifi or antivirus off. However we have also tried with my son-in-law's laptop with the same result, so I'm not really hopeful. Thanks,Peter.
