  1. AG Thanks for your further thoughts, I had thought this thread had reached it's end. Hornby gave me no indication why they thought my Elite was economically beyond saving, I would assume they had seen the date of manufacture, perhaps tried an update themselves, but nothing said. I don't understand why, on one update try, I did get as far as the download indicator bar reaching the end, but then a report "update failed", (or some such) . I did think of opening the case myself, just to see if anything looked fried, but, as you know, it appears to require a special screwdriver. Think I shall just abandon it and waste no more time. Even if I bought a new unit, no guarantee that it would have the latest operating version...
  2. Hi RAF Thanks for your further thoughts,...my Internet very slow today. I shall have to consider a new controller....
  3. RAF Now there's a point. I had used my Select as a walkabout, connected to the Elite by a suitable cable, worked o.k. Of course it wasn't connected when I started this update lark, but could it have affected something? Perhaps we shall never know, unless "someone" tries the same trick...
  4. Didn't intend to start WW 111 about this. However, I've just tried another update on my ancient Elite, this time went all the way through with the updating bar, then said update failed. Is there any point on me wasting more time on this? Perhaps we should all just close this book and move on....
  5. Chrissaf Thanks for your quick response. Just a thought. You probably know I have Windows 10 so that idea is a non starter. Back to the drawing board.
  6. In the other recent thread on this subject chrissaf states that a change of operating version can go back as well as forward. I'm wondering about trying a 1.3 download with my defunct one, just to see if it might be acceptrd. However, I can't see from the Hornby downloads that a 1.3 is now available, only the latest.Anyone any ideas?
  7. Just re-read Fishy's last, he says I had it switched on causing the problem. Don't understand this, the instructions clearly state "hold down the STOP button before powering up the Elite",
  8. yelrow Well said, my thoughts entirely. But I've spent a lot of time on this, if Hornby don't want to help, let it be...
  9. Further to the above, think the version must have been 1.3 that being why I tried to update.
  10. Seem to recall 3 at start up but that's all. Don't waste any more time on this, I'll write it off to experience.
  11. Hi, in reply to both of you, yes my Elite was working satisfactorily, presume it was operating perfectly, as to my update tries, I think I have said before it got as far as showing "updating" several times but with the number to select the PC type blinking. I did buy it secondhand, don't know what the number of the download was. The batch code is 13/07, suppose that makes it old?
  12. Rob You seem to have taken a lot of punishment. Think I shall stick to my Select, gives me no trouble...yet.
  13. Is that so? Up to now everyone has said updates are a piece of cake! Waiting for RAF to tell me how to dismantle it...or just dump it!
  14. For those of you who have been advising me on this saga, here is the latest. Eventually I returned the Elite to Hornby on 6th March and today had it returned with the advice that it is beyond economical repair! All I had done was to try to update it, following Hornby's instructions, using my HP laptop running Windows 10. Whatever can have happened to make it a complete dead loss? Next time, leave well alone,...if there is a next time.
  15. Thanks both for your full assistance. I take what you say about going through the instructions again from scratch, I will do this. However, I have checked each time what the port number is, usually 3 or 4, and made sure the download is to the correct one. This varies depending which USB socket I'm using, I believe two are USB2, the third I think is USB3, Don't know if this is significant. Also, trying with Tom's Toshiba, it had to download the update file from the Internet. I just can't understand why, on a few occasions including with the Toshiba, it gets as far as showing "downloading" but then no more progress, with that little line beside the PC type number blinking and unable to do anything further. The USB cable is the second one I have tried and is a new one from my, as yet unused, Elink pack. That leaves only me and the Elite itself. I'll try again from the instructions, failing that a return to Hornby with a begging letter...
  16. Chris Using my tablet to reply. The Device Manager tree is exactly as you show, only varying depending on which USB socket I use. My laptop has Windows 10. I'll leave things till tomorrow. Good night.
  17. Chrissaf ... Thanks for your quick reply. I may just try again tomorrow, but I'm sure I'm following the instructions and all the advices. As you suggest, perhaps a return to Hornby is the solution. It really shouldn't be as difficult as this.
  18. Update... Tried with my son-in-law's Toshiba laptop today, with much the same result. On the second try we got as far as "downloading" but no indication in the download bar and the little bar beside the selected type of PC kept pulsing. Is there anything else I should do or try?
  19. Of course, just hope I shall have some good news.
  20. Just to keep my topic going, I've had no success updating my Elite with my HP laptop so I'm hoping to get acces to my son-in-laws to try his. Not sure what he's got.
  21. Thanks, I'll give it one more go, then try another family PC.
  22. Hi all, I've been trying this all afternoon. Did get one try where it showed “Downloading", but the download indicator didn't move, not even any indication, gave up after waiting about an hour. How long should an update take on a laptop with a 1.3 processor? I understand about waiting to reboot, then have to wait about a minute for that awful ring thing to settle down. Perhaps I should see if anyone in the family has a different make, some folks seem to think HPs may be the snag. Peter
  23. Rob Thanks I have printed out your instructions and will try, will let you know.
  24. Thanks, I'll try that. I'm not using RM or Elink,
  25. yelrow Could you please explain what you did to uninstall and reinstall whatever is needed in Device Manager? Think this may be significant.
