  2. How sad, he died 1 day after his 100th birthday.  I've spent so many pleasant hours admiring his paintings.  I'm sure many others did the same.

His artwork was what would inspire me when selecting which kit to spend my precious 2/6d on.

  3. I was tidying up my stash and I found a "kit" I had come across in the early seventies.  This was a Hurricane produced by Bateman's.  The wings were blocks of balsa wood as was the fuselage.  The tail and fin were cut from sheets of balsa; there was a small sheet of brass, a brass rod three plastic things that passed as "wheels" , a tinplate prop, wooden spinner and vac formed canopy.  They did provide a plan but you had to shape everything.

And today we moan when a rivet is in the wrong place!

  4. You have uploaded loads of excellent photos in this thread but in time it will disappear below all the new threads.  Have you considered creating your on album on the site?  Go to Gallery and create an album for yourself then all you pics will be there in one place easy to access.

  6. I've just realised that Roy Cross .... who I'm sure will need no introduction here is 100 today!  I wish him all the very best!

He painted most of the Airfix box art during the 60's.  Many are to be found in his books... The Vintage Years of Airfix Box Art and More vintage years of Airfix Box art.

His illustrations are what attracted me to Airfix kits in my early years!  One cannot underestimate the effect his paintings had on a generation of children.

    Ad multos annos

  7. This one just flew into my study this morning.  Been after one for years. I finally decided to go for the 1:144 kit.  The 1:72 version with a 3 foot wing span was a bit to big to fit in any of my display cabinets ...... still it can sit to my other 1:144 airliners.

Such a weird plane - 6 propellors and 4 jets!

@john redman I have to disagree. This kit doesn’t even come close, for one, it is devoid of even the D-Day stripes that even a history GCSE student would spot. Let’s say you went to a restaurant and ordered a nice sirloin steak and was served a bit of rump, and when you queried it the chef came and said, “it’s still from a cow”. Would you be happy to accept that or think, yes it’s from a cow, but not the right part of the cow? 🤷‍♂️

@Sailorman I couldn’t agree more. I’ve probably made as many kits with alternative schemes as I built with the decals provided. One of my favourite alternative schemes is probably a set of Falklands War anti submarine Sea Kings which I built in the colours of a squadron good friend of mine served with and to mirror one he actually worked on. I used a couple of the yellow air sea rescue kits, filled in windows and added torpedoes and guns to reflect the changes they went through during the conflict. Michael Clegg did a piece on them back in March 2022 for his Workbench Blog. I was most proud 😊

Wow .... Brilliant idea how to set up that display of the to choppers ...... I had missed that. They look great.
