  2. It's Airfix and Humbrol for me.
  3. How's this for an old model. It is made of stone and is said to be a model of a temple in Malta dating back to 3600 BC!
  4. How sad, he died 1 day after his 100th birthday. I've spent so many pleasant hours admiring his paintings. I'm sure many others did the same. His artwork was what would inspire me when selecting which kit to spend my precious 2/6d on.
  5. Perhaps he means the very faint red band on the cowling.
  6. Actually he just celebrated his 100th birthday on April 23rd. See my other post....
  7. My vote goes to the Cunliffe Owen flying wing.
  8. People have always been building models ....................It's just that when there were no planes most times they built boats ......! They would build them out of anything at hand: wood, bones, clay etc: Some of their models are museum quality 😊
  9. When using a brush I make sure I stir the varnish really well than place some in a small container and add thinners. I use the vac formed chocolate separators .... the type found in Baci boxes as palettes.
  10. No it isn't. 😀 But that is the sort of kit available in the early 50's. Some people could turn out a pretty impressive model out of those bits and pieces.
  11. I was tidying up my stash and I found a "kit" I had come across in the early seventies. This was a Hurricane produced by Bateman's. The wings were blocks of balsa wood as was the fuselage. The tail and fin were cut from sheets of balsa; there was a small sheet of brass, a brass rod three plastic things that passed as "wheels" , a tinplate prop, wooden spinner and vac formed canopy. They did provide a plan but you had to shape everything. And today we moan when a rivet is in the wrong place!
  12. Nice models .... looks like it was a good show!
  13. This is an early Frog P51A. The best thing about it was the detail on the UC doors. For its time it was a pretty good kit.
  14. You have uploaded loads of excellent photos in this thread but in time it will disappear below all the new threads. Have you considered creating your on album on the site? Go to Gallery and create an album for yourself then all you pics will be there in one place easy to access.
  15. This email popped up in my inbox yesterday.

  17. I've just realised that Roy Cross .... who I'm sure will need no introduction here is 100 today! I wish him all the very best! He painted most of the Airfix box art during the 60's. Many are to be found in his books... The Vintage Years of Airfix Box Art and More vintage years of Airfix Box art. His illustrations are what attracted me to Airfix kits in my early years! One cannot underestimate the effect his paintings had on a generation of children. Ad multos annos
  18. Tour de Airfix is right about the spray cans ...... you have to be very, very careful when using them or you end up obliterating all the detail. I use short squirts whilst passing over the model. Keeping the can in a fixed position and then pressing the button results in a big mess.
  19. This one just flew into my study this morning. Been after one for years. I finally decided to go for the 1:144 kit. The 1:72 version with a 3 foot wing span was a bit to big to fit in any of my display cabinets ...... still it can sit to my other 1:144 airliners. Such a weird plane - 6 propellors and 4 jets!
  20. Can never have enough Mustangs!
  21. Wow .... Brilliant idea how to set up that display of the to choppers ...... I had missed that. They look great.
  22. I rarely build using the schemes included in the box. Makes life more interesting and I end up with a model slightly different to everyone else's......as you can see from recent my DC10 and TriStar.
