  1. Ouch ..... mine cost 70 Euro 😞
  2. Not a ship I know ...... but just ordered this. I've been after one for a good 50 years but always baulked at the fact that the only one available was to 1:72. At least I don't have to build an extension to my house for the 1:144 version. Hope it get here soon......
  3. A bit more progress. All the homemade decals are in place and they worked our really well. Still got a bit more touching up and painting to do before I install the undercarriage. That will be the last thing to go in given how delicate they tend to be.
  4. I tend to be the same. I love the old kits because they give scope for you to make something different to everyone else's build. I do build the newer kits but the vintage kits are just as much fun to build. This started life as the Airfix Avro 504k
  5. Satin finish lacquer to the flesh parts, matt lacquer to the clothes and gloss to the shoes and belt and I think I will call it done! ................. 55 years after I won it at a quiz. It's painted up as a patrol leader in the 1968 Seagull Patrol of the Stella Maris College scout group
  6. Hi AirportsEd, I wouldn't know. Planes are not really my thing. I suspect it isn't a 500 because the windows don't quite match the drawing I'm using. The decals in my kit were old, yellowed and unusable. Moreover, I liked this particular BA colour scheme. I mentioned earlier I build planes, tanks etc as a break from scratchbuilding my liner models and as a way of improving my model making skills. Hence I'm not too fussy about details. If it were a liner then I would be very fussy. With aircraft, If it looks the part then I'm happy.
  7. Totay I started work on the tail. Unfortunately as I was removing the masks I hit the fresh red paint. The starboard side of the tail will need repainting. I printed out the decals and tried a few of them out. Will try to complete painting the red on the tail tomorrow.
  8. Spent some time creating decal artwork. All ready to print onto decal sheet. l
  9. Got my compressor working again .... hope the repair lasts this time. Manged to airbrush the blue area.

  11. Ratch your idea for the base is a really good one ..... now where are my old scout badges!
  12. My compressor is still giving trouble and I can't do much on the Tristar and DC10. I spent some time working on this old kit after a hiatus of some 5 years! I think I might actually finish it shortly.
  13. Got my compressor going again .....though it failed again after half an hour!........ I think I was in too much of a hurry to fix it and didn't prepare the parts properly to receive the epoxy. Done it again, so it should be fine in another couple of days. I did however manage to treat the dark patches on the DC10's wing with more aluminium paint. Those were areas where I hadn't quite finished airbrushing the other day before the compressor failed. I also painted the first couple of coats of white to the fuselage of the Tristar. I'll let it dry till Sunday before applying the final coat. The undercarriages for both aircraft are painted and all ready to assemble. Masking the Wings was a chore .... I think next time around I'll pinch a could of plastic bags my wife uses in the kitchen and place the each wing into one bag and simply tape down the edge where it meets the fuselage. Can't believe I've never thought of doing that before!
  14. A number of factors contribute to this. First and foremost more people seem to be interested in aircraft. Even then, more are interested in warplanes and hence we get fewer civilian types and more warplanes. Secondly, 1:700 and 1:350 seem to have cornered the market. Besides the Airfix "fleet" I only know of a very few 1:600 ship models and most of those are 1950's / 60's examples where detailing is a far cry from the standard expected today. I find I'm the odd one out still building to 1:600. No problem though. I like the scale. Not too big like 1:350 and neither too small like 1:700. I've bought all the 1:600 types I could lay my hand on but for the last 15 years or so have concentrated on liners...... this has basically mean scratchbuilding. However, I will shortly start building a kit of the Airfix SS France I acquired but this time I'll build it as the Norway. (I already have a France). Should make an interesting pair. I will probably start a thread and post the build on-line ....... but at the rate I build it will probably take me some 4 or 5 months!
  15. Today I airbrushed the aluminium finish. metallic finishes really show up all the defects! Sometouching up required. I'm happy with the panel lines on the wings but not so happy with the circular ones on the fuselage ...... Still, you live and learn! Unfortunately my compressor broke down again. My fault. I left it working for too long and it overheated. WIll have to sort it out tomorrow but it wont be back in action for a few days after I apply the epoxy to the eccentric cam. That's going to push my programme back by a few days.

  17. By this stage I would have already applied grey primer and sanded it down with very fine wet and dry sandpaper using lots of warm water and liquid soap. I then move on to apply a first thin coat of the same paint I will be using for finishing. This first, thin coat shows up the defects which can then be rectified. Once it has dried I sand it very lightly and apply the finish coats. I used to use Humrol Satin white No 130 (because it didn't yellow with age), but of late I've been using Revell No 04. It seems to cover better and it too does not yellow. The old Humbrol enamel used to get a distinct yellow tinge with age. Bear in mind that whilst I am very fussy about my liners (passenger ships), I only build aircraft, tanks etc to hone my skills. I don't go into the same detail with them as I do with liners. The pic below is of the AIrfix Boeing 737 I built a year or two ago.
  18. Today I airbrushed the black as a primer to the natural metal areas. Tomorrow I will airbrush an aluminium coat over the black. Slow progress but I will get there. In the meantime the ships plans I ordered have arrived and will have to decide whether to start with a scratchbuilt Rotterdam or the France converted to be the Norway ...... Decisions, decisions!
  19. Didn't get much time to do anythng today ..... managed to make some masks for the cockpit glazing. Ready for the black undercoat and the aluminium finish ....maybe tomorrow with a bit of luck!
  20. Just received the latest Workbench email from Airfix. Don't know whether any or all of you guys got it.... There is an update as to the new Bristol Bulldog MkII 1/48 kit. Makes for intersting reading.
  21. A bit more progress. I've airbrushed the grey areas and have started masking them prior to applying the metal finish. I've decided to go for the British Airways 1980 Livery. Blue underside and red tail. Will need to make my on decals. For the DC10 I'm going for a garish scheme. CP Air Orange top, red flash and metal underside. I've ordered aftermarket decals for that one though I will paint the main colours myself.
