  1. I notice one or 2 people talk about locking in the price by preordering. This certainly was not the case last time I pre-ordered a Peckett 0-4-0 in good faith and it was 3 years before it was released by Hornby. The dealer very apologetically had to charge me the price increases that had occurred as Hornby had charged him the full price and not the original price advertised 3 years before. Unless Hornby have changed this policy I will never preorder again.
  2. I had just signed in for first time for quite a while and have been very shocked and saddened to hear of Chrissaf's passing. He will be sadly missed along with his valuable input by us all. May he rest in peace and my condolences to all his family and friends. Thank you Chrissaf for all the help and advice you have so cheerfully and kindly given us.

  4. Hiya. Empathy on the strange loss of your post as it happened to me a few days ago. I had evidently used a so called banned word that we use every day here. I reworded and it posted ok. Regarding the Ivatt - is it possible that the motor is sitting a tiny bit high at the rear causing the worm to be meshed too deep in the gearwheel? Check that the motor turns over freely by hand without power. Only a tiny misalignment of the motor can create a lot of friction. Just my thought from your symptom anyway.
  5. I am delighted to hear that my advice helped you. It just so happened I have one in pieces at the moment that I am modifying from the long version to the short ready to fit under a LMS 2p. 0-4-4T 3D body kit. Great feeling when you get a faulty loco back to running order again. Well done Matt!
  6. Hi. On top of the chassis assembly is a small screw with a black wire attached to it via a soldered tag. Undo the screw and remove it. You will then be able to pull off the cover which reveals the driving gears including the worm gear. You will of course need to release all the insulation tape and the wiring loom. To release the gears under the worm the motor will need to be removed. This is secured by a bracket held by a screw under the motor's non drive end bearing. The motor will be stuck to the chassis with some sticky black tack but it will come away with its worm attached and you can carefully lay it aside with the wiring still attached. The drive gears can now be lifted out. Hope that helps. I have one in pieces myself at this moment. Cliff
  7. I have a number of older Triang locos which now run ok on modern track including Peco Code 75 which is even shallower than Hornby and Peco code 100 track. I have replaced tender and bogie/pony wheels with new Hornby wheels or similar to suit. Not having access to a lathe I reduced the driving wheel flange depths by setting them individually on a close fitting nut and bolt and securing in an electric drill chuck with the drill safely held in a pillar stand. With the drill running I was then able to carefully file the flanges down checking the size from time to time with a Vernier caliper. I also filed some metal from the backs of the flanges to make them thinner. When replacing on the axles you then have to set up the quartering and the back to back measurement. None of this is for the faint hearted but I have had reasonable success. It helps to have a stock of spares for any that you spoil of course. DONT FORGET EYE PROTECTION!
  8. I have browsed through HM backnumbers and in October 2014 edition there is an article by Paul Chetter covering sound and stay alive fitting to all the low range Hornby 0-4-0 locos both steam and diesel. Well worth a read. Digital back numbers are available on Pocketmags for £4.99 each.
  9. I seem to remember an article about sound fitting to Hornby 0-4-0s in Hornby Magazine by Paul Chetter. Probably around end 2013 and beginning of 2014. I will try to find out. That is if my memory is correct of course. The Zimo chips are more expensive than TTS but would give you a little loco that would be quite a talking point. You can always strip it out and reuse on another loco if you get bored with it or the loco wears out.
  10. Hi Chris. Yes it rhymes with tilth! Could also have a y added. Just as "bad" as flirt and flirty in my view. Have you also considered cylinder ....... which rhymes with box. During my engineering training more than 50 years ago now there were various terms which could have other meanings of a more dubious nature. One that comes to mind is the term used for threads (of fasteners or bolts) that did not conform to standard as being a term used for illegitimate sizes beginning with b and ending in d. Also occasionally used regarding bolt head sizes. Also gender terms used for inside and outside pipe threads. Another would be the turning over of the first piece of soil when a railway is built. Just some thoughts for you to check the list for. Will let you know if others come to mind.
  11. Wow Chris! I find it incredible that a British company gets itself in such a silly position. How can we talk about weathering without making a loco rhyme with flirty lol. I do know another word for grimy but that could be just as bad in the filter's view. I presume the filter only affects this forum and not Hornby's internal IT systems. I can't see someone like Mr Simon Kohler putting up with vocabulary restrictions like this lol!

  13. Thank you Going Spare I am glad it is not just me on both counts. My intuition is the same but I did not know if there was a hidden quirk with these locos. The loco I have came in knowledge of a stripped or broken drive gear, a common and easily fixed problem on these locos. Inspection revealed the valve gear not located properly on both sides and I think this probably caused the fracture of the double gear in the gear train when it locked up. Each time I relocated the valve gear it dropped out again and the fractured brackets were revealed. The brackets are not shown on the service sheet as a separate item so I am hoping when the new valve gear arrives that they are included. Waffling on sorry!   14. Last year I had a reminder email to renew my HCC membership in advance of expiry. So I renewed and ticked all the online boxes that I was a member. When after a considerable wait probably due to the pandemic membership was confirmed it ran from date of renewal and not date of expiry of previous year. Hence I paid twice for a few weeks. I took it up with Hornby and they were unsympathetic and said membership runs from application date and not from expiry date. I will renew on or after the date in future.
  15. This new post was again rejected as having banned words. I have have had to use the word "fastened" instead of the more common word used referring to the device used to fasten. Post was then accepted. Have to say I find this attitude rather pathetic. After all we don't refer to the implement used as a fastenerdriver!
