stevestrat
Well, finally heard back from the RAF Museum . . . . I'm no further forward really! They can't say what colour the drum would have been, sent a rare colour photo they have featuring an oil drum in the background from their archive, USAAF/RAF Nuthampstead, circa 1943. Its not a brilliant photo, colours are a bit washed out, its black but no clue as to any markings on it ☹️

dogsbody
From here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/8270787@N07/sets/72157605269786717/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/8270787@N07/15431952229/in/album-72157605269786717/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/8270787@N07/14199979595/in/album-72157605269786717/ I know these are not much help to you in your search for detail. There are more images in this group and I went through them all. The drums look to be either black or brown. The black ones sometimes have white printing on them but nane are clear enough to see detail. If the brown ones have any print, it's in black and cannot be seen. stevestrat
Maybe not much help with the detail but interesting non the less. Thanks for those. PS, can admin get rid of my double post?!
Kenneth ONeill
I'd council caution anyway; according to Wikipedia the Lancastrian entered actual service on 31st May 1945 (and his shots are of a natural metal aircraft; BOAC wartime machines had Bomber Command green and earth upper surfaces).
