Graf Spee a quick relaxing build????

I have set her in a seascape on the wooden base (purchased from Just Bases). I mixed together blue, black and white poster paints and painted the horizontal plane of the base. I then mixed plaster of paris and a little water into the paint mix. I used a pallet knife to spread this over the base, making rough wave patterns. I then set the model onto the base and refined the wave patterns with an artists trowel and left it all to set.

It depends on weather Trumpeter remembered this time to include the boot top height in the hull to begin with. They arn't very good with "correct" details in any scale.

If the height is there the boot top should be no more than 1mm deep.

Even that makes the boot top 700mm (over 2 feet) deep. I've yet to be able to get close enough to a vessel to observe a boot top over 6 inches deep full size (based on looking at the Plimsol mark).

I recently bought a "Vintage Classic" 1:600 Graf Spee. Having done an Exeter conversion and currently working on Ajax, seemed only right to get one of these kits as well for the stash to complete the "River Plate" set. Have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the molding, minimal flash, and some good detail. Even the 4.1 inch mounts are a lot better than those on Bismarck and Scharnhorst, although I'll probably still build replacements for them.

One criticism of the kit is how thin the main barrels are and I agree with this, their ends are basically the same thickness as the 5.9 inch barrels, but that should be easily fixed, perhaps with some sleeves added to bulk them up.

This kit will need quite a lot of added detail, but it looks to be a very good basis for this, and only 4 solid ladder-ways to remove, thank goodness. A quick initial test fit indicates it should go together well.
