Ratch
Back in 2008 I built this full hull model utilising part of thw WEM etch set.http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1312/4776356/10047679/301281005.jpghttp://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1312/4776356/10047679/301281006.jpghttp://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1312/4776356/10047679/301281008.jpghttp://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1312/4776356/10047679/301284318.jpghttp://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1312/4776356/10047679/301284349.jpg
Ratch
Eleven years later I have decided to build one waterlined. This is what I'm starting with. My first task is to waterline the hull using an Olfa P-Cutter. I have a base for it too.
Ratch
I started painting the base on Saturday using oilsThere is more to work on with the seascape. Not much work on the ship, but some painting and lots of research and trying to identify parts on the etch runner.I have found a Walrus in my spares so now I have three. These were easy to paint compared with the construction of the tiny brass starfish you may be lucky to see - if you have excellent eyesight. John Symmons
Hi Ratch. Will be following your Beffast build with interest as I have one waiting in the wings, and after my KG V build it's awaken my interest in these 600 scale ships. I also have the WEM PE set for the kit and I must admit it's a bit intimidating. I have found a Walrus in my spares so now I have three. These were easy to paint compared with the construction of the tiny brass starfish you may be lucky to see - if you have excellent eyesight. /media/tinymce_upload/6c99c32136fffa72c192e50032f09a8f.jpgI take it that is the starfish you're refering too? For those interested here's a scan of the PE set it measures about 8 X 5 inches. /media/tinymce_upload/0e988b32fb96d234e36ae3d1f019ab2a.jpg You don't say how much you have left after your previous build but, looking forward to see how you get on. Ratch
Yes John, that's the starfish. Some of the pieces are not identified on the instructions. I'm not sure whether WEM thinks everyone knows about Naval subjects, but they're certainly a mystery to me.
Ratch
This is stage 3 I did stage 12 at the same time Etched struts and propellers. I think Y turret goes here Before they get obscured The sliding doors will be fixed. The etched cradle for the second Walrus on the catapult. The forward deck fitted. A bit of painting and stage 4 done.
Ratch
Below is a better picture of the torpedo tubes. The blunt end - I know, the stern - an etched basket thing (depth charge equipment?), two etched guns and two boarding ladder thingies. The ladder things have been a real pain to assemble; only three parts (with two bits left over) each, but do you think they'll stick - and even when you think they've stuck they fall apart again - and with the continual handling get bent and deformedI am in two minds whether to leave them and paint them or fit the davits supplied with the kit
John Symmons
Hi Ratch.I see you've fallen victim of those almost impossible boarding or accommadation ladders; I chickened out of those in 350 scale as they were usually stowed away when at sea; and only brought out when anchored and not at a wharf. I admire your effort, but ask yourself is it really worth it. I've included the instructions from the WEM HMS Ajax fret as I seem to have miss-laid the Belfast ones. Just note the bit about being an extra detail for diorama and only fitted if needed. /media/tinymce_upload/65748bf6fc7e2c68b3db1c676636f4ae.jpg Hope this helps. Ratch
Here is Stage 6 complete Stage 7 is three of the main turrets Stage 8 is the fourth turret And here's where I am with stage 9 - those pesky Oerlikons (or whatever they are) If you don't look too closely they're OK. Formed of two miniscule pieces of brass, impossible to handle by hand and incredibly difficult to manipulate with tweezers, I cannot think of anything that could make working in this medium pleasant. I would say that this is my last time using PE but I have a set for the Airfix Hampden to do some time. Let me lie down in a darkened room - I may be some time...Thanks for stopping by. Dad Paul B
Nice work so far Ratch. The racks on the stern definitely look like Depth Charge racks. The charges would run along the length and look like Oil Drums. They were just rolled off the back. Later on they got launchers which allowed them to be fired forwards which meant you didn't need to steam straight over the sub (losing ASDIC signal as you did) to attack it.Oerlikon are an armaments factory specialising in small, rapid fire cannon. Probably either 20 or 37 mm Anti-Aircraft guns. I am not surprised they are tiny!Looking forward to seeing the completed build.
Ratch
Thanks for your encouragement John, unfortunately this is just one of a number not illustrated in the Belfast PE instructions. Anyway, Stage 9 is complete and so is Stage
Kenneth ONeill
OK, I kow the kit is in a wartime build, but I have this feeling that A and B turrets are (will be) trained on Scratchwood Services? 😆
Ratch
I got a bit more done today. Stage 11 Stage 13 Stage 14 Stage 15 Stage
Ratch
I jibbed out of fitting the starfish and completed Stage 17 I've been doing some painting too
Ratch
Stage 18 The last major etch replacement proved beyond my skills. The two 8-barrelled pom poms could be much better designed to fold into shape rather than need to glue. Also, the ammunition boxes do not slide through the mounting rings as described on the instruction sheet, being too wide and cannot be forced, being too fragile. I resorted to the kit parts adding a few of the etched fences.Stage 19 Stage 20 Stage 21 Stages 22 & 23 are the aft Carley Floats and racks (that I forgot to photograph before adding them to) Stage 24 I have to fix the ship to the base, add water effects and aerial wires (or at least have a go at them).More soon. Ratch
Over the weekend I touched up the paintwork where necessary. Aerial wires were made from stretched sprue and fixed to the masts. I spread Woodland Scenics C1211 Realistic Water over the base and placed Belfast in the desired position. This was left for 24 hours to set, by which time Belfast was firmly fixed to the seascape. I added Liquitex Professional Gloss Gel in specific areas to simulate waves. Again, I allowed 24 hours for this to fully cure before picking out the wave crests in white (some thinned).http://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL761/13303934/24837301/414245025.jpghttp://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL761/13303934/24837301/414245028.jpghttp://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL761/13303934/24837301/414245029.jpghttp://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL761/13303934/24837301/414245026.jpghttp://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL761/13303934/24837301/414245030.jpghttp://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL761/13303934/24837301/414245033.jpghttp://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL761/13303934/24837301/414245032.jpghttp://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL761/13303934/24837301/414245031.jpghttp://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL761/13303934/24837301/414245027.jpgI can now call her complete. John Symmons
Hi RatchNice to see the Belfast at see again. You've made a good job of what seems to me a complecated kit. Maybe you'll inspire me to finally have a go at mine. I oftern bring it out of the stash, but to be honest it does scare me a bit, especially with the WEM PE set. If I do finally get around to doing it I'll only go for the railings. Anyway thanks for sharing you build and hopefully Airfix will some day think about retooling some more 600 scale ships. Ratch
Thanks very much John. The WEM set is rather daunting and I missed out a few pieces that I could not get the better of.
