Rarest Hornby Thomas?

Recommended Posts

Hi All, for those who may collect Hornby Thomas & Friends range.

From what research I have done, I consider the Thomas, non-motorised, six flanged wheel locomotive the rarest of all the Hornby Thomas range.

Murdoch, Oliver and the two Spencers  donot come near how hard it is to find this elusive version.

Ramsey gives a catalogue number as R251, first edition available from 1988 - 1992, a second one   was made from 1995, Ramsey does not list a finish date. This rare version I found in R857 set.

This version was only made for The Great Race set.

So why so rare? Well as can be seen from the photos wheels should be flat discs to run on the 'Playtrain' track. It had a battery powered Annie coach to push it round the track, so was unmotorised. This version as can be seen, has the normal flange wheels found on the 4 wheel clockwork Thomas.Well can't you swop the wheels, well yes you could but a close look at the chassis block shows they are different.

The rare version does not have 'CE' on.

My researched showed that this model was in the catalogue photo of the set. Also Wikipedea says there was only 2 known examples, in 20 years I have only found another two.

Anyone else got one?
