1/72 Airfix Tiger-Wittman Scheme

Recommended Posts

This is the new Tiger I finished in the Michael Wittman scheme. I used Humbrol enamels and the tracks were done with the buffable gun metal and then buffed on the high spots to simulate tracks in use. Antenna are added from sprue from references on the internet. Being a command tank, it had more than the usual complement of radios.forum_image_605a3c4473614.thumb.png.8a3e33fda220464e6a2f5e401b3e38bc.pngforum_image_605a3c4ac9a2e.thumb.png.d55ebbb21e13ad31bba2ca55d02d23de.pngforum_image_605a3c50af50a.thumb.png.0e2e22f338d051a3ef3e8c4fd85b40b2.pngforum_image_605a3c56110d8.thumb.png.838275c4a0de8912539c0481efe5e103.pngforum_image_605a3c5d3f8eb.thumb.png.cfb8629268fb03f273a525bf186fd6d2.pngforum_image_605a3c636dd1f.thumb.png.755ec1eb69e3bc4dce4bfc20b29b8cde.png

Very nice!

It's just crying out for the hatches to be open and crew figures popping out. C'mon Airfix, 1/72 scale figures please or have I got to go East European?

Looking forward to building this, first 1/72 scale Armour . R.I.P. 1/76

I'm very surprised that Airfix didn't offer the easier option and just make them separate.

Probably because they wanted a simpler breakdown for the starter sets, plus increasing the parts count ups your tooling costs. The Dragon and Revell 1/72 kits have a more complex breakdown, but cost quite a bit more.

If you're handy with resin, you could take a relief of each of the hatches you wish to open with something as simple as plasticine and then just pour in a few drops of resin into the mold to create a replica. The inside face can be replicated with thin plastic card. You would then file the hatch on the model flat and drill out the opening. Alternatively, you could use a pin vise to drill around the hatch to remove it, but then you would have to rebuild the area around the cut-out. I think the first method would be the easiest.

  • 7 months later...

The '007' was a late production Tiger I - it had been delivered together with '009' a couple of weeks before to the Abteilung. It ought to have Zimmerit coating and have the all-steel road wheels without rubber rims.

But the model itself looks convincing. It is a far cry from the old Airfix H0/00 Tiger from the Later Cuneiform Era, and the tracks sag just as they do on the real thing. It also captures well the nature of the Schachtellaufwerk running gear.

Keep up with the good work!
