Tour de Airfix
This is my 1/72 Me109 Airfix ref: A01008A from 2018 release. I’ve finished it out of the box in the colours of 9./JG 54 Grünherz (Yellow)13+ (said to be flown by Oblt. Anton Schon but maybe Lt. Josef Eberle is more correct) which crashed in France 12 August 1940 - Soesterberg. I found it a lovely kit to build and am looking forward to see how you get on 👍

Tour de Airfix
Just love Michael Clegg’s write up on this kit and am now convinced I’m going to have to get one to make that intriguing scheme https://uk.airfix.com/community/blog-and-news/workbench/its-raining-messerschmitts-kent

Sailorman
Perhaps he means the very faint red band on the cowling.

Ratch
I'd spray the nose white, mask up and spray the red band, removed the masking and overspray with a white mist. If painting with a hairy stick, paint the white, pick a pale red or mix red and white to get the right shade and carefully paint the stripe. Use a long bristled signwriting brush to get the line with a steady hand.
Pretty Mediocre Modeller
That red band has a very interesting story behind it. The story goes that the commanding officer of JG53, Greschwaderkommodore Oberstleutnant Hans-Jurgen von Cramon-Taubadel, wanted to marry a Jewish lady, which was frowned on heavily by the powers that be, who advised that the move would not do his career much good. He married her anyway, and as a punishment Goring, in a rage order a red ring painted around the cowling, obliterating the unit marking of the 'Pik-A' as a punishment. To show their annoyance at this, the Greschwader then painted out the 'crooked cross' on the tail! after a few months all was forgotten, the red band went and the 'Pik-A' returned, as did the unmentionable tail marking. when white 5 was shot down at Manston it did have the tail sign removed/ painted over, so you don't need to find a replacement in the spares box!
