Hi Ratch.

Great work so far, This is becoming a real magnum opus. I admire your tenacity doing all that fiddley painting and the shear number of colours you've used. Should look great when finished, I'm just wondering what you're going to do with it when finished.

I remember seeing many years ago, a BBC comedy series about a dentist and his family who'd decided to retire and decided to make what you're doing, obviously he never finished it, just ended up plunging each figure into a pot of paint.

Anyway keep up the good work and hopefully we'll  see the final result in all its glory.

Remember we dso this for fun                             John the Pom

Cheers John, these form part of a much bigger project. These are being done as a Build Review on the Airfix Tribute Forum. I have been interested in the Napoleonic Wars for some time. I had a little reference material and started painting the figures I had. Then a couple of years ago I read the AIRFIX magazine guide 4 Napoleonic Wargaming ISBN 0 85059 178 3. I accumulated more reference material and decided to repaint my existing figures and acquire more to represent the armies at Waterloo as close to reality as I could. This requires figures from other manufacturers to fill gaps, so those have not been posted on this site.

I suppose I should test the wargaming rules in the magazine guide with a few skirmishes involving the figures I've already set up.

4e Régiment de Cuirassiers 314 men

The regiment nominally consisted of four squadrons each of two companies, each company having 100 men. Increased to five squadrons from March 1807 and back to four squadrons from 18 January 1810. Blue coats with long tails until 1804, then short-tailed coatee. Facings of orange collar, cuffs, cuff flaps and turnbacks for 4th regiment from 1810. Pewter buttons, silver for officers. Turnbacks had blue grenades. Shoulder straps were blue, piped in the facing colour, replaced by red epaulettes. The helmet was polished steel with brass comb, black mane, black cowhide turban, black visor edged with brass. Red plume on the right, brass chin scales. Senior officers had white plumes. Polished steel cuirass, leather straps, brass scales. Red lining edged white for all regiments. White waistcoat. Buff breeches. Small black cartridge box on white belt over the cuirass. Long black boots with bronzed steel spurs. White gauntlet gloves, black cravat, white cloak, blue housings laced white. Cuirassiers were mounted on blacks or dark bays. White sheepskin edged red, white grenades on the housings and regimental number on the valise.

Cuirassier Trumpeters wore the green imperial livery coatee from 1812. Collar, cuffs and turnbacks were in the facing colour, imperial livery lace. They did not wear the cuirass and were mounted on whites or greys.

  • 2 weeks later...

A new set to me (I've never owned this set before) French Artillery (S37) first issued in 1971.

Plastic Soldier Review don't rate these too highly:

This set has three guns, which Airfix described as 4-pounders. In fact, they are a little small even for that diminutive calibre, but there are many more serious faults than that. Though the barrel itself is fair the carriage has had little attention paid to how the original looked, and apart from having the classic two 'cheeks' it really has nothing in common with the real thing. It is greatly simplified and has crosspieces missing and in the wrong place. The wheels have nine spokes when they should have 12, and both the wheels and the whole carriage are much too small. The tops of the wheels stand 108cms tall, about waist height, when they should be 135cms tall for this calibre. The limber is worse still, being nothing more than a peg on wheels onto which the gun can be lifted. This really was a far more sophisticated device, but this representation is absolutely basic and completely inaccurate. Most glaring of all is that it has a two-horse team when four were used for 4-pounders. As is usual with Airfix the horses are 'pegged' onto the limber, with no attempt at harness and tack. The wheels of the limber are 72cms high, when they should be 102 - about the height of the supplied cannon wheels. Also, they have nine spokes like the cannon when they should have 10.

The crew wear the uniform with the double-breasted jacket with closed lapels that was introduced in 1812 (and appeared in 1813) for both artillery and infantry. They have the shorter gaiters and the shako with the correct features, so they are certainly appropriate for Waterloo. Curiously all are wearing a full pack, which while entirely right for the marching figure, would be very unlikely for the men serving the guns, and they also have swords which are much too long. The detail is not very good, so for example none of the men have straps to keep the packs on. Poses are unusual in that as well as the standard crew ones there is a sergeant figure and another on the march. Both are very useful, though there are three teams of horses but only two sergeants to lead them. The detail is not good, and they do show their age. At the time, they were made there was no real competition, but that situation has changed.

Replacing the guns and limbers entirely and some deft work with a paintbrush will resolve or hide many of the problems, but as it stands this must be one of the poorest Napoleonic artillery sets ever made. Once again, mixing these with other sets now available may help to hide their inaccuracies.

While the guns and limbers are not very good, I think the figures are passable and will not stand out if mixed with figures from other sets. They will be OK in my wargaming use - I have learned to live with the myriad of inaccuracy in small scale figures, they are good enough to portray a mass of battlefield proportions viewed from some distance. The Foot Artillery uniform retained the dark blue coat, faced red with brass buttons. Blue piped red lapels, cuff flaps and collar, red cuffs and red turnbacks with blue grenades, blue piped red shoulder straps. Blue waistcoat and breeches. The shako bore a grenade and crossed cannons, red top band, cords and plume, also red pompom on campaign. Blue greatcoat. White accoutrements. All gunners had the brass hilted hanger with red sabre knot. Dragoon musket with brass fittings. Drummers had Imperial Livery. Officers had gold metal and lace. The colour call-outs on the instruction sheet are a bit hit-and-miss. While the figures are pretty accurately portrayed, the guns & limbers of the French were green and not dark earth. Airfix seem to like 54 Brass for their cannons but I prefer bronze. On we go. 47227551812_1d95454415_z.jpg 46556350334_5be3ea8685_z.jpg46556350204_4c21aa99da_z.jpg

Not exactly 2015 John, Those figures were painted many years before that. I started on the Airfix Waterloo Set at the end of November 2018 and will complete it shortly. Then I have plently of HaT, Italeri, Revell, A Call To Arms, Waterloo1815, Strelets and other figures to paint for the battle.
