The big build - Hawker Typhoon Mk. 1B

Toboldlygo

Recommended Posts

On a very windy and wet June 6th (Typhoon weather if your in a certain part of the world and of course the 73rd Anniversary of D-Day), a large box was opened and construction finally began on the mighty 1:24 Scale Typhoon Mk. 1B.

Painting aside, steps 1 & 2 are done. The spars and part of the floor of the cockpit have been dry fitted to assist alignment of the cockpit structure (steps 3 & 4).

This kit is going to take some time....

Also cross-check that sub-assembly against the lower wing centre section.

I already had that in mind (did the same thing with the 1/48 Hurricane).

Still working through pages 8 & 9 of the instructions, doing a lot of hand painting in-situe once parts are glued in place. Lower wing skin is being used as a jig to keep everything aligned ;)

Cockpit is now completed, it was like building the real thing in minature...

I did consider getting the etched replacement instrument panel, but then thought what the hell...

Construction of the engine beckons - however that will have to wait, as more locos need doing

Oh yes; this isn't so much a kit as a series of models that eventually build up into one really bigmodel!

That's how real planes are built ;)

In between commissions, I was able to get the engine build started and trial fitted to the engine mounts*

* The cross location lug that locates the engine to bulkhead needs a slight bit of fettling - otherwise the engine won't locate on the engine mounts.

@james_mower - Well, my Uncle was an airframe fitter/builder for Scottish Aviation (and later British Aerospace/Jetstream) (and arranged a plant tour for me) so I did actually know that. 😎 My point was that it's an unusual way to build a model kit.

I want to see more the big kits done like this - it makes them much more interesting  😎

In the mean-time I got  a bit carried away last night - engine block painted..

Word to the wise, the plumbling (pipe-work) can be a bit of a pig to fit - especially the pipe from the cockpit fuel tank that connects (once it is in place) to the underside of the engine.

/media/tinymce_upload/bdc4de57783fa4d357170573be3a46ce.jpg

Now on to the task of fitting all the pipework and ancilleries to the engine.

Slow progress on adding bits to the engine, it's being hampered somewhat with the amount of flashing that I am having to remove from some of the finer parts - very annoying.

Well MR Mower may I congratulate you on a wondeful engine a cockpit section and to wish you well on this build.

And there's more, finished page 14 and the top of the engine is done.

It's a good job, I have a knack for plumbing, otherwise I think the kit may of made an unscheduled flight!!

A plumbers nightmare in miniature, Page 15 done and well on the way to finished page 16 - cooling system is dry fitted to check all the clearances (needed a bit of fettling)

Yes, from here to attaching the lower wing is the "nervy" bit as things get heavier and more delicate.

It's certainly put on some weight today - having the lower wing in place makes it easier to hold..

Hi James.

Been following you build with interest, it's certainly a magnium opus. Saw this kit recently in our local hobby shop and saw it had over 500 parts, but the price was well out out of my reach at over R2000, but it's certainly a superb kit.

Your build should be a very useful reference guide for others doing or contemplating building this monster. Well done and keep up the good work and postings.

That engine and cockpit section looks really great and looking forward to the continuation of the build.

Keep your eye out for the kit on a certain well known auction site - it can be be picked up for a lot less (I certainly I didn't pay full RRP).

In the mean time the structure of the wings is taking shape...

Hi James,

That is an awesome build and fantastic looking  Tiffie. I'll be watching this one. Just wish I had the space to get one of these!

Thanks

It's getting bigger and heavier the further I get into the build, it may even be it's full wingspan tomorrow...

... as I've nearly finished the wings innards..

"I think, I'm going to need a bigger worbench..."

Putting a spin on a quote from a certain Spielberg Film here, because the Typhoon has got big, really big all of a sudden.

Last night saw the port-side wing fully assembled and today saw the starboard wing in place (this took slightly longer due to me needing to repair the top of the starboard under-carriage - snapping off and had to do a pinning operation..

Having decided how I want the fuselage (it will be my own configuration), it was trial fitted prior to a trip to the paint-shop).

Progressing beautifully.

Thanks..

After several hours, a couple of shots of whisky, a lot of swearing and copious amounts of low tac masking tape - the body and most of the engine panels that I intend to fit are on (and came up with my own method for fitting the body too  😉)

/media/tinymce_upload/75ca59b89075bb3398608469e803411b.jpg

Lower fuselage panel fitted first, top sections glued together - aside from the panel that sits over the cockpit fuel tank.

With the fuselage in place and allowing the glue to cure, it was time to fit the panels - this was where all the problems started. However with my years of experience, from working on real war planes*, it's nothing that can't be solved and my Deluxe Materials Perfect Plastic Putty will fill the gaps.

/media/tinymce_upload/f2374b948ebfe631f4d5e413e234210e.jpg

One more panel to add and the look I want for the engine will be done, I can then do some filling, before anymore building work.

*By real war planes, I mean the following: BAE Systems Harrier GR5a/ GR7/ T10/ 2 Plus,  Sea Harrier FRS1/FA2/FRS51/T8, Hawk, Tornado, EF Typhoon, Hawker Hunter/ Sea Hawk/ P1127, Fairey Firefly, DH Sea Vixen and a certain 'Loch Ness' Welllington...

And there-by hangs a tale' love to hear more some time, especially the Loch Ness Wellington.
