Dav2
I'm guessing many have these to store and display loco's that are not currently in use on the track. Just looking to see if anyone found a nice cheap one that fits the loco's in well. I know it's easy enough to find one, but looking for folks experience and if they found one really cheap that works perfect. Or are cheap ones exactly that, cheap. Is it better to get a mid priced cabinet. TIA
walkingthedog
Lidls do some excellent cabinets and they are available occasionally on special offer. Highly recommended and worth waiting for.
LCDR
I have one of the Lidl cases, thery are fairly heavy but hold a lot. /media/tinymce_upload/6b2b6e82edd0684d80c6b0f140361986.JPG. I keep some N gauge ornamental (non-working) locomotives in mine.
NWR-Gordon-4
I also have the same glass display cabinet from Lidl, that LC&DR has. My two are white though, not a wood effect colour. I am unsure if Lidl still stock them, but since I bought my two in 2014, they have been coming back into stock randomly in their one off stock products, usually found in the middle of the supermarket, somewhere. morairamike
My small versions of Lidl display cabinets.
NWR-Gordon-4
@morairamike I have never that small version, of Lidl's glass display cabinet before. How do these cabinets open? I can't see a key slot. I spy in your second cabinet, a rare Thomas locomotive. Is that the R9104 Thomas the Tank Engine with the pristine body with the tired face, or the Thomas locomotive from the R9260 Thomas & The Great Discovery Train Set, with the muddy body splattered with brown dots and the same tired face? It looks like the R9104 Thomas the Tank Engine to myself. GNR-Gordon-4 (HF)
LCDR
I have seen the display cases at our local Lidl again for sale a few years after I bought mine so they must put them into stock now and again. Unfortunately I don't have any more room for another!
morairamike
They don't have keys just a hidden hinge and a magnetic catch. Had them for maybe 6 years. Thomas was presented to me when I returned in 2009, along with the gold plated Mallard. Thomas doesn't get out much but he was on his own no rolling stock. They gave him to me first, then Mallard. She is TTS fitted and is used./media/tinymce_upload/1932871e8a307dd9e7b89035e05540e8.jpg
Dav2
Those smaller cabinets look perfect. I'll keep an eye on the middle isle deals on lidl to see if they come back in Thanks
NWR-Gordon-4
@morairamike That's a rare Thomas you have. It's R9104 Thomas the Tank Engine made in 2008 and sold in 2009, exclusively by ModelZone. Only 500 models were made. They did not come with limited edition numbered certificates / boxes. morairamike
Thanks GNR-GORDON-4 I didn't know that. He is in s bit of a state as his decoder has a broken wire. Maybe fix him one day
NWR-Gordon-4
You are welcome. 😀 Decoder? Has it been modified to DCC? It was not a DCC Ready or DDC Fitted model, from the factory. GNR-Gordon-4 (HF)
Ruffnut Thorston
The last time the large display units were on sale in Lidl was from December 15, 2019... There is a thread on the "Off Topic" sub forum.. https://www.hornby.com/uk-en/forum/glass-display-cases-coming-to-lidl-sunday-15-december/?p=
NWR-Gordon-4
I imagine it will be a while then before Lidl will stock them again. I am sure the will stock them again though later this year. They have been popular, each time they have been brought back. GNR-Gordon-4 (HF)
morairamike
Yes Thomas has been converted to DCC. The decoder slides into the boiler below the chimney and the body clips back on. Will look into repair when the Vicar at the church of Virgin on the Ridiculous let's me off grave duty.
NWR-Gordon-4
Out of interest, did you convert your Thomas locomotive, morairamike? GNR-Gordon-4 (HF)
