'Rosemary' Carriage derailing

Hi there.

I have a set of three Pullman coaches. S8914. They all had the wide loop coupling, non NEM pocket type, on them and when connected to a loco with a narrow loop coupling (NEM pocket), the front carriage derailed. This was especially prevalent if the carriages were being pushed. The cure was to change one end wide loop for a narrow loop NEM pocket.

On my Pullman the couplings are riveted on. I drilled out the rivet and then drilled a clearance hole in the coupling and used a small self tapping screw to fix the small coupling to the bogie. Result no more derailing.

  1. Is it free-running - are the axles in place correctly, the pinpoint ends clean?
  2. Have you checked the 'B2B' - back-to-back spacing - should be near-enough 14.5mm.

Without getting too personal (!!), how old is Rosemary? Is it possible the flanges are too deep for the track you're using?

Al.
