  1. I bought the Daily Mail today and in there was a superb model railway feature of a chap of 83. It really is magnificent. It is a real model railway far removed from a trainset. It's taken 60 years to build.
  2. I am not joining the mugs club of paying over £230 for a model with flickering firebox, choo choo sounds etc. The less that get's sold will become evident as these prices go uuuuuuuup. How many of the collectors think thaey are covered under their house insurance in the event of a disaster (fire, water damage)? I know we are going off topic for this thread but how come some items are over 50% reduced at certain retailers. Non sellers, shift them at trade or less. Far too expensive springs to mind.
  3. All these little add ons to the latest models, add greatly to the price. The firebox door was more often part open or shut on the move and they are not that wide either. I fail to see why the feature is there at all. We had glowing fireboxes some years back and synchrosmoke. No doubt we will be getting cylinder draincocks working along with sequential safety valves lifting next. All for an increase in price of a mere £300 per loco. It is becoming cheaper to collect classic cars.
  4. Hoggerhead, I used to occasionally go to Lostock Hall, trainspotting. It was also one of the last steam sheds. Funnily enough, my aunt moved to Canada and worked in the Bazooka Joe gum factory in London, Ontario.
  5. Why not build one from scratch, with brass plate, Romford wheels and motor and gearbox of choice?
  6. Email today for members only 20% discount THIS WEEKEND! Da Daaaaa
  7. I am going to a Train Fair at Haydock Racecourse on 10th April. I have been before but didn't buy anything then. I do have a small list of "maybe if in good condition" this time.
  8. One of the biggest sales "misses" is introducing the Hush Hush and not getting the superb teaks back in production. I missed out on them due to financial constraints at the time but would get a rake if they were reintroduced. No doubt many LNER fans would like to see them back as well with the plethora of LNER express locos available. ( by all makes)
  9. Approx 1:5 internet purchases will be refused using a card until verified. Perhaps you had just hit that point of both cards needing a verification check. My last 2 M&S purchases were refused on tap and go and I had to enter the PIN. It's just a safety check to see it's you using the card. Unfortunately you may have just hit "checkpoint Charlie" with both.
  10. I have done the odd cab interior on a steam loco. That was quite difficult but looked OK. I also have done yellow axle boxes with red central line, as in Timkin roller bearings style, on a couple of Britannias.
  11. Yes but the insults from one of the mags writers are free of charge smile
  12. The thought police of words that decides what is or is not acceptable interferred in my reply with a normal everyday word. And again in this reply. Perhaps we should use Google translate and convert to Greek
  13. Two instances of crossings I have witnessed. On the ELR there is a crossing, with gates, at the end of Ramsbottom station. I was on the platform when a train pulled out and then panic on the station with red flags being waved. The train stopped immediately right over the crossing. Someone had rung to say there was a person under the train. It was a hoax, causing delays for rail and road, while checks were made of the whole train. The other was actually on the Manchester Ship Canal, at one of the swing bridges near to where I live. The lights flashed to stop the traffic but one of two cars in front of me decided he wasn't stopping. Down came the barrier and crashed into his roof in the middle. It raised again and he had the gall to continue. Stopping trains at speed takes a lot of distance, hence the long delays experienced. Ships are harder to stop even at 8 mph. ( Not to be confused with boats) Most barrier crossings are automatic on the rail network.
  14. Yes, and they seem to still be sending out those horrible little 0-4-0 locos as punishment. I won't rejoin the "Club" as it isn't worth it. 10% discount is offered elsewhere (or more) and who wants a badge over the age of 12. The mag improved but that's about it.
  15. I have always used HMRS Presfix transfers for all my renumbering of locos and coaches and Modelmaster nameplates. The HMRS sheet has all the correct size numbers, coach marks, flashes etc all on one sheet. Loads of them making them a better buy that many others. Having said that the 00 version seems to be currently out of stock everywhere. They are usually around £8. The link shows the sheet but the price is "0" guage as "00" is out of stock. https://hmrs.org.uk/br-steam-era-loco-and-coach-insignia.html
  16. A4's and A3's hauled the Flying Scotsman and these links will take you to Sankey scenics who produce Headboards, Coach Tailboards and coach Name boards https://www.sankeyscenics.com/product-page/copy-of-4mm-pre-war-titled-train-flushing-continental BR days https://www.sankeyscenics.com/product-page/copy-of-4mm-titled-train-the-east-anglian Don't take any notice of the links train referral names as it will link to Flying Scotsman
  17. A few years back when they were in trouble they off loaded stock directly and at Hattons etc. I got 10 bogie bolsters for £30 at the time. These offers are a massive reduction on RRP and must be a Hornby warehouse clearance. I don't think Apple have any similar problems as there are always brand concious people who will pay daft prices for a particular brand. At present where I live, we have Mercedes mania. Most of those probably have very little savings and get their car on PCP just to appear wealthy.
  18. Is it a sign that Hornby are in trouble again? With the new ridiculous prices I assume they have lost massive sales as there is a limit to peoples pockets. Eg a coal wagon RRP £24 when Oxford do similar for £10. I think I know which I would buy.
  19. Today's new stock at Hattons is showing massive reductions on Hornby stock. Well worth a look.
  20. I have checked the listings and the snowplough attachment is not showing. Contact them direct as I am sure they will help you.
  21. I will shorten links to other sites with this, https://tinyurl.com/app And then make it linkable with a magic wandface_with_rolling_eyes
  22. I found this: https://callingallstations.co.uk/2014/07/14/how-to-improve-old-rolling-stock-part-2-coupling/
  23. I haven't yet mastered shortening long links on here.
