  1. Hello. Is the decoder itself a Hornby product?
  2. Whilst I've no idea what 'commercially available' means, I've used these in the past. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/265444702078?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=M5m1ldRKQnq&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=AUL_0xFqRaC&var=565264174282&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY I installed within the inside of the roof, drilled a hole in the base and concealed the battery and switch under the chassis.
  3. Righto, thanks. I'm still not sure I'll pull the trigger on the newer unbuilt type, Sam's Trains is hardly a fan, despite confirming it's better than the original release.
  4. My system is solely app based, I sold the hand controller without attempting to use it. To be able to control ten running locos identified all from photos on the app and quickly selected with a swipe of the finger on the latest 10" samsung tablet with a stunning display, rather than having to punch in two or four digit codes to controll more than two locos, is without doubt my greatest investment. I went from a select controller to this, and nearly went with the Elite. From comments I've read on this forum it's clearly a much loved and effective device, but I'm so glad I didn't go the elite route.
  5. My Z21 system is flawless, except for those locos running TTS chips. From memory I have about forty-five engines, with decoders comprising a mix of laisdcc, one or two bachmann 21 pin and a fair few hornby, of which eight are TTS. These eight are the only decoders I have trouble with, and sometimes zoom off or fire up and trundle off without prompt. The Hornby technical chaps have valiantly attempted to resolve the problem, without success. I intend to replace all TTS decoders with non-sound types. Even though the problem is infrequent, it's of sufficient concern to me that it will eventually lead to damage.
  6. Thank you for demonstrating that there is absolutely no room for criticism of any kind on this forum. Mod note - from the rules... Moderator action discussion will not be entered into within open forum. Members who have moderation issues should raise them direct with Hornby Hobbies.
  7. When I started the hobby three years ago and didn't quite anticipate the obsession it would become, I concentrated on the budget end of the market. I've since gone full circle and changed practically all to the super detail versions, or the likes of dapol, heljan and bachmann. For me, there is just nothing like the beauty of the detail contained in these variants, no matter how fast I throw them around my tracks.
  8. A post recently appeared requesting a source for striking railway workers, which was clearly made in jest. My contribution, along the same lines, was 'availability' from Bachmann of executives taking bonuses whilst overseeing a poor service. Comments have been removed, citing 'offensive messages have been removed' and the entire thing locked. Is this really the best way to represent the giant that is Hornby? Is our hobby representative of the older generation, who appear completely intolerant at times? Not for the first time, this is a perfect example of the heavy-handed tactics of moderators on this site who do nothing but turn people away from the official Hornby forum. Regrettably, the clique that exists here prevents any meaningful debate on this topic and at times, the tone of responses I've seen to new members who come here not understanding that Hornby employees don't contribute, is shocking. Do better.
  9. I guess that must be the R3979 with 'double blast pipe'. Shame, because I wanted the British Enterprise nameplate version.
  10. Any thoughts on my hush hush question? It would be easy to miss. Thanks.
  11. Hello. On closer inspection, only one of my four Vitrains Class 37's have tryes. The rest are without, and there is no groove, could they have been converted to run without tyres?
  12. That was not the point I was making, nor is it something I disagree with, but when has that ever prevented a civil case?
  13. That's a very strange comment. Hornby may not sue Sam, but if you make statements in public, and those statements affect a brand to the extent and by way of the volune that Sam elicits from his large follower count, then you will be at risk of litigation. Your phrase 'legal fact' is completely meaningless. This is not a case of 'he said, she said', as you are implying. Colin, Do you happen to know which of the hush hush versions are a safe bet? Not the A4 types, the bulbous 10000 British Enterprise type. Thanks.
  14. I wonder if they sit flush to the inner flange of the hub and, whilst different to the existing tyre, produce the same level of traction.
  15. For the life of me I can't see how these traction tyres will fit. I've sought guidance from the supplier, who also confirmed, in advance of my order, that they would fit.
  16. Seven pin, yeah, that was it. https://uk.hornby.com/community/forum/old-seven-pin-pendolino-decoder-not-responding-to-controller-commands-somewhat-resolved-321035#post-321196#post-321175
  17. hahaha blummin lazy Brits. All was fine before our European friends quit and went home, having being made to feel unwelcome. Having said that, most of the staff seem to be doing well, most have DB5's, 911's or some form of classic.
  18. Thank you. Oddly, my pendolino sets are definitely different internally, one seems to be older than the other and came with an odd [odd, to me] decoder, a six pin if I remember correctly, which I converted to an eight pin once the decoder failed [and was the subject of one of my forum posts some time ago]. The other, the nine car configuration, must have come DCC ready. Here they are, the nine car running at circa. 70% capacity. As you will see, not much wrong with traction.
  19. I run two Class 390's Pendolino's now and again, one a nine amd the other a five car configuration, as one runs better than the other. I've just been checking my traction tyres and they're positioned on either side of the furthermost rear wheelset on the driving car, on both sets. The service sheet 300D, suggests they should be on one side of each wheelset on the rear bogie. As I've outlined, my traction tyres are fitted to one wheelset, and on this wheelset both wheels on the same axle are flanged. A simple question; is my setup correct and did Hornby change the configuration from 300D? Thanks.

  21. I've no axe to grind but having had both, Superquick are nothing like the detail and quality of Metcalfe.
  22. I have an extensive amount of Metcalfe kits, I think they're stunning. A sample can be found here... https://youtube.com/user/willhay555
  23. I had this problem with a Hornby Virgin Dummy DVT but that was sat on the track, not moving and burned/melted directly above the blanking plate on the decoder socket. The result and smell was quite impressive, which Hornby replaced.
