1/48 Meteor F8 (Work In Progress)

I've not tried a work in progress on here before so lets see how I get on with this one. The kit looks really nice in the box . . . plenty of detail and finely done too. I'll be doing the 111 sqn machine using the kit decals.

Some nice detail is provided moulded into the parts, it all responds well to dry brushing and washing. Once assembled it forms a nicely complete cockpit.

I've made some good progress with this kit. The main airframe is together with premiliary sanding and primer complete to see if and where any filler was required, as it turned out very little was. I'm going to have he cowls loose so the engines can be viewed, I painted them in component form for fitting later, my brush painting skills so poor that I masked and sprayed the intake mesh!!. Airfix provide a stand for an engine to be displayed outside the airframe but if you use this you will end up with a very hollow looking nacelle, even with the cowl on. The wheel wells have some nice detail provided, all easily assembled as part of the wing.

Looking good so far Simon.

Have you fitted the nose cone yet, and if you have did it give you any trouble? As I remember another contributor on another thread said that he found the nose impossible to fit and ended up binning the whole kit.

Cheers

Jason                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             I agree, very good so far.

but that binning of that kit, honestly what is wrong with some people. Imagine doing with a     1 24 mosquito at £160 though.

I binned mine; it's possibly my post you're referring to.

The nosecone fitting frustrated me beyond belief and should not have happened with a £30+ new-tool kit from a leading manufacturer. It's a matter of scale, too (pun unavoidable). I would expect a £160 kit to fit as darn near perfectly as it could be, but my experience of a 1/48 Meteor has made me think twice about any new-tool Airfix let alone such an expensive one like the Mosquito.

I spent around two hours trying to get a decent fit on the nosecone and in the event after the sanding, shaving and constant attempts at gluing ruined the nosecone and attachment area on the plane itself. It should not have happened.

That said, I am looking forward to Airfix's Sea Fury and Walrus and would even consider the new Stuka as and when it comes out (all 1/48). They have those chances to prove themselves to me.

Hello Simon

Ditto to the above comments, so far so good. When ever I start a new kit I always try and find any reveiws I can on the kit, as often gore-warned is fore-armed, so I'm greatful to PMM (Jason) for his posting on the Airfix Me 109E-4 build.

Will be following this build with interest enven though I don't do 48th scale or aircraft without propellers; I have to draw a line somewhere otherwise I'll be swimming in unmade kits.

Remember we do this for fun     John the Pom

P.S. Nothing wrong with your dry brushing, you should see mine.    JtP

The comments above had me concerned about the fit of the nose so I've just delt with this area.

i didn't find any real problem. I think if you haven't fitted the bulkhead flush with the front of the fuselage then it would be different, also the nose gear door obstructs as the cut out at the front of the wheel well is a little short but nothing that can't be adjusted in a few seconds.

Making one myself with the exception of the nose cone the fit has been exemplary, a bit tweaking of the inner lip of the cone and the front bulkhead fettled it though.

My bug bear is the decals, don't get me wrong, they are in perfect alignment, excellent colour saturation and settle down fine with Decalfix, it just could the sheet not been physically a little bigger, even using a scalpel it's difficult to get between them, and then trying to handle the little pieces after you take them out of the water is a nightmare.

Moan over, and I have to commend you on your work so far. Excellent progress.

Making some real progress now. Main components are all assembled, no major issues encountered long the way. I've undercoated the undersides gloss black in preparation for the silver. The yellow tail was sprayed as was the black edging. Airfix do provide decals for the edges but I feared the complications of trying to coax them round the leading and trailing edged neatly.

It seems to me that parts E1 and E2 (the intake internal liners) are paired with the wrong intakes. So insted of E1 going in E6 it should go in E5 (the "B" option parts, I've not tried them with the A option parts)?

I used the 'A' option parts which seemed to go together without issue, not sure I remember now if I matched strictly using the part numbers or by eye.

The main painwork is done using MrColor/Mr Hobby Acylics. The silver is perhaps a little too shiny so I will have to try to tone that down later.

That is looking good 😀Yep a little bit too shiny but the camo is good 😀

So did you have any problems with the nose cone? I guess not as it looks to be on nicely.

The nose wasn't the best fit but most of the problem was solved by extending the opening for the nose gear so that the door didn't get in the way.

I finished this a while back but only just got round to taking some pictures. A nice little kit, I would build another sometime.
