Sailorman
Just finished my scratchbuilt 1:600 Lafayette WWI hospital ship. It's been a while coming but it's finally finished. It sits nicely near my other 1:600 liners. You'll need to right click on the picture and open in a new tab to see it properly.

Hurricane Boy
Another great scratch built ship Patrick. Every time you post one of your scratch built ships, I have to go and research it if I am not familiar with it.Have you done the Andrea Doria yet?Cheers,Tim
John Symmons
Hi Patrick. I echo the above comments, a superb build, you must have the patience of a saint to build those scratch build ships.Just one question, how did you build those ratlines? I tried it once with both stretched sprue and thread both ended up an unholy mess and were scrapped. I haven't had the guts to try again.Remember we do this for fun John the Pom

Sailorman
Hi HB. Yes I've done both the Andrea Doria and the Stockholm.....the ship involved in the collision.Again, right click on each image and open in a new tab.
Hurricane Boy
Beautiful work Patrick. I assume that these models are in 1/600th scale as well.I remember as a small tyke looking at a photo journalism story of the sinking of the Andrea Doria in Life Magazine (or maybe it was Saturday Evening Post) and being deeply impressed by the whole thing.Makes one think that re-issuing some of the old 1/600th Airfix liners would be a good idea…. The Queen Elizabeth, SS France, Canberra, QE2 and of course the Mauritania….Thank you for sharing.Tim
Ratch
The tool for SS France was lost, Tim.
Hurricane Boy
Thanks for that Ratch. I wonder what the likely hood is for a new tool of some other liners?Airfix has released the Titanic in many scales other than 1/600th recently but likely through other companies tools.Tim
Ratch
The Titanics were Academy kits. The last 1/600 kit Airfix did was QM2 IIRC.
Sailorman
Ratch is right, the mould for the France has been lost. If you come across a kit of the France grab it whatever the condition! I manage to get hold of two. One was in a terrible state - built up with impact adhesive but I stripped down and rebuilt as the France. The other will be rebuilt as the Norway. The second one was being advertised on ebay as unbuilt and I noticed the two hull halves were cracked down the middle. I sent a message to the vendor telling him he might want to point this out in the description. He said he does not sell damaged goods and was afraid it might damage his reputation. He said that if I could do something with the model he'd be pleased and he simply gave it to me!

I keep hoping for some new liners to 1:600 from Airfix. I suppose when they finally do issue another one I'll find I have probably already scratchbuilt it! Still - hope springs eternal! AirportsEd
It looks great - and way beyond anything I'll ever be able to do! Where do you even start on such a build?Ed
Sailorman
It looks great - and way beyond anything I'll ever be able to do!Where do you even start on such a build?EdYou start with the waterline plate and a cross section for a spine. Then you keep sticking bits on till it's done. Here are some shots of my Maxim Gorky build. You can see the waterline plate and the spine in the first shot. Sailorman
If you fancy trying it out start with something easy .... say an escort carrier like HMS Audacity. It's honestly not that difficult. It's also much easier as a waterline as you don't have the issue with complex underwater curves. You might also find you can to use parts from some Airfix kits ....like the Swordfish from the Ark Royal. A 1:600 Audacity will sit nicely next to the Ark Royal.
