Pony truck wheels on the 4-6-2s

Pony wheels are where there is only one axle, if there are two axles it is a bogie.

A prairie is a 2-6-2 so has a pony truck at either end.

A 4-6-2 has a bogie at the front and pony truck at the rear.

A 2-6-4 has the pony truck at the front and bogie at the rear.

the trouble with the big engines is the length of the loco vs the toy like curves.

the older models used to make the pony truck swivel. However on the real things the bit you see is part of the main frames and dose not move. They are not pony trucks the big coronation’s and Royals use Bissel trucks the LNER used a different set up called Cartazzi truck.

The problem with this is due to scalling down and the thickness of plastic needed to make the chassis robust enough for everyday use give rise to the problem of not enough room to fit a sliding wheel.

there’s are two work rounds well keeping the ability to use smaller curves, make the thing a pony truck and give it a flange wheel (doesn’t sit well with greater detail for the model). Or design the chassis properly and remove the flange (not such a bad idea but looks wrong on smaller curves).

A 3rd way would be a bigger curves on your layouts but set curves would need to be something like 8 or 9 radius, the bigger the better.
