Keeping F1 cars on track

Hi all,

I bought an older set to add to our growing collection of cars and track so that we can build multiple layouts and we have found that the cars are somewhat "flighty".

To explain, the set is the 2010 Scalextric Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Race Set (C1253) with 2 Mclaren F1 cars (C3046 & C3043).

I have found though that the cars wont stay planted on the track and very easily come off the track.

I have noticed that when compared to modern cars they don't have much magnetic pull so they have probably degraded over the years. Does anyone have any recommendation to help keep these cars on the track? (besides effectively building a Nasscar track).

Hi Collis,

It is certainly possible that magnatraction has reduced over the years.

Heat in particular can cause this.

You have a few options:

  1. I would check out these tuning tips:
  2. You could try lowering the magnet
  3. You could buy a stronger replacement magnet.

Good luck!

Hi, you could try easing off on the controller. Boring watching cars go flat out around a layout coming off all the time. I have five R1 curves in my layout, and you have to brake just right to negotiate them. Much more interesting braking and accelerating in and out of corners. New tyres (scalextric restorations) and a clean track.
