Help required to identify missing part

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My son and I have discovered an old train. It is missing a part and one of the wires has fallen off. Can anyone advise if it is fixable and if so, where could we find the information on where to re-solder the wire's and buy the missing spare part.

Many thanks & very excited to see if we get an feedback.

Rgds

If that is the box for the Loco, please let us know the Model number from the label.

(I have also renamed your thread to describe the help you need and I will add the Model Number if you are able to provide it)

Its basically an x04 motor with syncro smoke unit

prev user has soldered the 2 red wires directly to brush, common 'fix'

also should have 2 brushes, they slot in black part in diagram, 1 each side held in place by spring, insulated part against brush with the wires

check black part has 2 slots and isn't broken

and just noticed, by yellow sleeve lhs, check wires/solder isn't touching the motor/magnet

prev post awaiting approval..depending upon what you need etc

X67 Carbon Brushes X1 Pair, For X03 X04 EMB Motors

X298 Brush Lead & Clip -- the proper part instead of having a soldered 'brush'

the motor will also need a couple drops of oil on the felt pads, commutator cleaned plus a wheel clean etc

Thanks for the support Simon. Anywhere you can recommend where I can read up on these topics or get some simplified diagrams or photos, and perhaps where to get the spare parts.

We are in Norway, and setting out on this Hornby adventure is not the easiest here as limited stock in the shops. I would send it off to a professional to fix but the postage cost and everything makes it not economical.

Answering your supplementary question first as that may influence your decision to push forward with the repairs. The coarse flanges on the driving wheels should not give you any problems on plain track but may lead to stalling or derailing while negotiating current specification points because the depth of the flangeways and clearances between the frog and check rails have been reduced.

If you do proceed, you appear to have a LNER green B12 loco so Service Sheet 67 is the one I think you will need, plus sheet 51 for the motor (accessible on the Lendons of Cardiff website via the Useful Links post pinned at the top of this forum section) will give you some - but not all -pointers for wiring runs and part numbers.

The black brush insulator looks to be broken. Also, if the Synchrosmoke system works and you intend using it, the top of the smoke unit body is missing - this has a funnel directing the smoke to the base of the loco's chimney.

EBay for the brush holder, you can get one with a rivet that you squash with a pair of thin nosed pliers. When you de-solder the brush be careful as the carbon may fall off if you put too much heat into it. The top of your motor should look like this older version of your chassis.
