How can I start a model railway

Hi Sidozy

Welcome to the forum.

Flying Scotsman was a passenger locomotive. A possible idea is a train station. Ticket booths, pedestrian bridges, platforms and lots of people. Maybe even a newspaper stand.

Remember to keep your layout goals within reason. We all want a layout like Charlie's Chadwick Model Railway or Oscar Paisley (both on youTube), but those are thousands upon thousands of pounds and decades of experience.

Start with a loop and a passenger station. Let your imagination guide you forward.

Have fun!!

Hi, do you mean a track plan?

I would recommend as a first railway, to use a plan from a book like the Hornby Track Plans book or there are other people that have published plans as well. There are also some free track plans can be found online.

With the published plans, someone has done the thinking about what makes something fun already. Take a look at some and imagine what you could do, shunting, running around etc.

Welcome to the Forum.

Several things - most mentioned above:

  1. Space available - you'll always want more.
  2. Security - small children, visitors, dogs / cats, atmosphere.
  3. Who will operate.
  4. Who will maintain / repair - it is learn-as-you-go for many, but A LOT of care and precautions are required to maintain in good operating condition and still use regularly.
  5. Scale - there are many available. May even have big pockets and a large private garden - always looks impressive! May consider the new and developing TT scale, or smaller.
  6. Funds available. This is a hobby which never ends - don't forget this!! There's always a new model, super interesting, or uprated version of an older one .... every couple of months there's a 'fascinating and superb new addition' to consider, in addition to the 100's available.
  7. What era - modern, heritage / preserved, pre-war is popular when all of the speed records were being created for steam. Is the Scottie LNER or BR?
  8. Location - industrial, urban, town centre, small port (aka South Coast of England).

Main thing is, enjoy!!

Al.
