What has happened to the Forum

Recommended Posts

I was nearly tempted to just say nothings changed, why do you ask? However, I'd be slapped for that :classic_wink:

This new updated forum went live yesterday, plenty of discussion ongoing in this Forum and Website Feedback section.

A few of us have highlighted some inconsistencies in the navigation structure which I think are being fed back. For me, the experience on mobile phones on the new forum is inferior, and needs looking at, but for desktop and for tablets in landscape mode it’s pretty easy to use once you know your way around the new structure.

OK, so I have deselected the sections that are of no interest to me and entered the forum by clicking on the big red Hornby button followed by the recent activity icon it I still see posts popping up from Airfix and Scalextric.

How can I stop that from happening? Or is this the equivalent of the U2 album Apple forced on users a few years ago?

What type of device are you using @SteveM6? Phone, tablet or computer?

If you don’t want all posts, then clicking on Hornby and then Sort By>Custom > 5 days (or Today) will filter out most of the pinned topics and give you recent threads. It’s about the best I’ve found but they really need to sort out the navigation.

To be honest, I’ve just gone with the activity page as the other brand activity is limited compared to the Hornby forum

When compared to RMWeb (who use the same platform) the implementation is unnecessarily poor

Using the “unread content” button to get to a new post in, say, HM7000 sub-forum then allows you to use the navigation link top left to step back to the whole HM7000 sub forum and browse all the threads in the old manner. Still clunky I’m afraid.

As far as I can tell, there’s a step missing in the navigation after selecting brand

I'm on a tablet and this is the sort box that I get.

It shouldn't be a showstopper but very irrationally, I find unwanted posts about someone's boat or plane, extremely irritating. We should have a choice over forum content.

I can understand why someone at Hornby Towers would think it may generate some cross brand activity but at least give us the choice.

I am very tempted to test the limits of the new forum's profanity filter on this one.

@SteveM6 I think the trouble is when you select Home, brands, Hornby the screen is full of the pinned posts. If you go to page 2, the unread posts at least have the red spot. That's as close as I can work out for seeing unreads from your tick selection!

The splitting of forum brands is ongoing and not worth getting your belly in an uproar about. When they have sorted it then all you will see the Hornby stuff. If you want Scalex or Airfix you will have to decamp to over there. Its early days yet, give them a chance.

You're right Rob. If nothing else it's a reminder of what it's like in the real world!

I don't like the new look what's was wrong with the old forum.

They were changing platforms so it was going to go anyhow, and there were many things wrong with the old forum, that the Mods had been fighting to get fixed for years.

I have noticed a definite decline in posts and comments of late. What was one of the busiest topics was DCC, but I notice only one posting in the last week. There is still a reasonable amount on General Discussion, which one would have expected. Has everyone migrated to TT120 now?

I don't know if everyone can see this icon or just Admin and Mods, but if so it shows analytics for the page you are on, be it a forum section or a single post.

@96RAF I can't see the analytics page, but that may just be me. @Aussie Fred I have to agree with you there. I would expect a decline in DCC topics because of the launch of HM7000 and it having a separate forum and and a huge interest in TT because it is new, and that's a positive for Hornby and the scale. In all the other sections I have noticed a decline in posts. There are, however, less 'stupid' posts, which is good.

I have also noticed a decline in posts on the three other forums I frequent, so I don't think it is just a Hornby thing. I have moved much of my online interest to FB where there are so many topic groups that I can focus my activities with modellers whose interests are closer to mine.

@96RAF Is that figure for total members based in any sort of reality?

We think it is total members including guests who could be casual viewers or 'bots. It seems a tad off scale to me for a hobby site.
