Gulf Porsche 917 (03409-2)

A nice little kit for a nice little car.

I had to do the paint job three times until I got this result because the masking tape had taken off parts of the paint at the demarcation lines. Revell's Paint Remover was very useful to remove the paint completely before starting the job again.

Blue (Hu 47) and orange (Re 30) airbrushed, black lines brush painted (not so clean as they should be). I have added seat belts and cleaned the ventilation slots on the front fenders.

Hi Paul.

That's a very nice Porsche and a delight to see a car on this forum, not sure of the vintage of the moulding, but seeing the box it's quite a few years old and you've made a really nice job of it; well done. Love to see more. It's really a pity Airfix seems to have forsaken the auto section of their catalogue, still we can always live in hope for a change.

Keep them coming.

It was first issued in '72 Paul

M211C/02411-2/03409-2/03409/93409

Porsche 917

1/32 scale.

Available as M211C in 1972.

Issued as 02411-2 from 1973 to 1978.

Issued as 03409-2 from 1979 to 1980.

Reissued as Gulf Porsche 917 (03409) from 1998 (due March) to 2002.

Issued as Starter Set (03409) from 1998 to 1999.

The Scalemates site only lists the year of issue for the specific boxing. If it was issued with another product code (like this was) it omits that part of the story.

The Type 6 Oval logo first appeared in 1978

One can tell this is an old kit, by the box design and the Airfix logo printed on it.

I hope you don't mind me asking, paul-muc, about how did come about buying this kit. I assume it's in new condition. It must be new, if you've only just built. Are old kit's like this collectible and rare in this condition, or not really?

I must have bought this kit in 1990 in a shop. I had bought any Airfix car kit I was interested in. And even now, buying Lindberg and other brands at eBay, the kits are in good condition. You may get the Bugatti 35b, 1930 Alfa Romeo, MGB, Triumph TR 4A, DB 5 (old and new), Monty's Humber, even the MG K3 Magnette for about 10 euros (8.90 pounds), because they are not rare. The rare ones are very expensive (as would be the 917), but mostly they are in good condition too.

I don't doubt it. My link is the bottom of their tree, it's a massive database so I wouldn't expect them to be 100% correct 100% of the time. You could always post on Scalemates and add to their knowledge base if it's not correct.

I have contacted them but haven't had a reply
