1:72nd Scale Vickers Wellington Mk.IC

T2B

Recommended Posts

Like many others out there I recieved my Vickers Wellington new tool kit on Pre-Order and started it straight away, but James started his build post first so initially I wasn't going to do a post as I didn't want to compete for views and comments. However it would appear our aircraft are on different flight paths so here is my work so far.

I'm doing aircraft AA-R from No.75 Sqn (NZ) RAF from the box artwork. I started on the wings as at the beginning of the build I wasn't sure how I was going to paint the fuselage interior.

The main wings went together quickly (as my aircraft will be in flight so the under-carriage parts/construction wasn't required) and no photo's at this stage, and were soon ready for the paint booth. Next up were the engine parts and some detail painting.

The engines were assembled ready to be married to the wings.

The wings are complete apart from decaling and can be put aside while I now concentrate on the fuselage construction!

So far all parts fit have been perfect, hopefully it will continue!

Mines waiting to be re-raised from Loch Ness ATM.

So you'll be doing the exposed geodetric frame work like you tried to persuade me to do lol?

No I won't be, but look at the picture of the one your doing (the box art) you need some exposed frame work along with flames and a crewmember on the wing...

I put mine to oneside, as I needed to do something else (with no missing/malformed parts) to get my Airfix Modelling Mojo back - thank the modelling gods for the gem that is the Eindecker  😎

Yeah I had noticed the box artwork, but a search of the internet shows all RAF flight crew (WW2 era wearing a VC) in wing crawling positions are sold out!! Somebody else must be already planning that, can't life be so unjust lol?

Now for my next update!

With the wings complete I started painting the interior parts of the fuselage. The4re is an awful lot of interior detail but when closed up not much will be seen and it would seem AA-R had the side fuselage windows paneled over so nothing will be seen inside the aircraft central and rear sections so I have decided to leave most of the interior detail out (it may come in useful for other projects??

/media/tinymce_upload/1dc9af25983bdd07c359e672804818d0.jpg

The cockpit section will be painted and detailed, and I will have to source a crew for the aircraft. I also used the inside of the fuselage sides to practice my dry brushing.

/media/tinymce_upload/c4384d65af6731ca30e255e52e34d52b.jpg

The main fuselage floor will be inclused, and therefore I paint it because I no its done and I can practice so more wear/weathering methods? The bomb bay will be closed on this build so the relevant parts beneath the floor will also be omitted.

/media/tinymce_upload/4b25bdc8000428c65090b0998b4e0920.jpg

Hopefully I'll be starting the construction of the cockpit and fuselage tomorrow.

The internal fuselage parts are coming together ..........

The central and rear fuselage has most of the internal detail omitted apart from the floor and a couple of dividers for strenght. The cockpit has some good detail which I have included as hopefully some of it will be visible through the glazing?

The fuselage halves should be closed tomorrow. I am currently working on the pilot (as George the Auto-Pilot can't take-off and land) from a certain box of RAF WW2 Pilots and Ground Crew

Hopefully more will follow tomorrow  😀

Masking was completed and we made it to the spray booth ..........

/media/tinymce_upload/cf9fa1c61421a75da293af19bb0a03c4.JPG

Then a coat of Night Black was added all over!

/media/tinymce_upload/59ce22df1fbaf848df0b7ac43994b922.JPG

Now the paint is applied and touch dry I can see 1 or 2 small imperfections  🤔. Probably due to rushing the build a little bit over the past couple of days as I go away for a week at the weekend and I was trying to get the Wimpy finished. Hopefully I'll be able to iron out the blimps ???

After some minor touch ups my Wimpy was ready for the paint shop again .........

Dark Earth Brown was added and will be left overnight to dry and hard so hopefully it will be ready for the final masking and the Dark Green Camo effect.

But last night before the canopy was fitted for the masking, I forgot to introduce you to the pilot .........

My Wellington AA-R is now finished. But before I show you the finished photo's I'll introduce you to the inspiration behind this kit and to some degree my build .......

Sergeant Pilot James Allen WARD VC

/media/tinymce_upload/02fd5b5aa2095aa95264e4df41afce31.JPG

And now to reveal the finished build!

/media/tinymce_upload/5631c7e818bdba69319f1f60eaa62e5a.JPG

And once again I have tried to recreate the box artwork, which on this occasion depicted a real event and the extremely brave actions of Sgt WARD VC. Unfortunately I couldn't create a figure on the wing so Sgt Ward is about to climb out of the astrodome with the canvas cockpit hood he used to smother the flames, and the pilot can be seen looking out of the window at the damaged engine.

I hope you like my efforts and what I have done??

And Thanks James. Yes it's a little different, and I had the ideas a lot earlier when we were messaging on your thread but I didn't say anything in case my thoughts didn't work out! But I did chuckle a couple of times when you were making suggestions and I thought "Yeah I'malready doing that" lol

Hi T2B

Clever! Very clever, brilliant idea, well done and thanks for posting the finished result. It look great and sure to be an inspiration.

Years ago a friend built the old Frog/Revell Shackelton Mk3 in fligh in SAAF markings and asked me if I knew of a way to have spinning prop as opposed to stationary ones. I told him about an old Eagle Wall spitfire I build in the late 50's that had a clear plastic disc in place of a propeller, and surgested that he could try clear film with lighly air-brushed blades to represent the spinning props. the result was very convincing and really looked the part. I've often wondered why no other manufacture hasn't copied this idea, it could be included as an optional part together with the regular propeller. Hint Hint to Airfix for another first and a world beater.

Remember we do this for fun                               John the Pom
