Wobblinwheel
Can you guys imagine a steam locomotive that is 132ft long? Mind-boggling...!
ellocoloco
Fantastic - what a job they have done. I wonder if UP will consider a triple header once 3985 comes out of refit 2021/22. 4014+3985+844 would be felt this side of the pond.......................... atom3624
I was watching the YT steaming of the preserved one - BIG!! Imagine an OO scale one on 'our tracks'.HO is near impossible as it is, but a full on OO ..... !!I know - never going to happen! Al.
Rana Temporia
Impressive! Have you seen the video shots with the cars crossing in front of it? I know it’s a telephoto shot but there is only going to be one winner there. The only OO model likely to be made would be an American 00 one which I think run on 19mm track. HO is the standard there, however, I agree it would be huge and ther is no way it would go round 1st radius curves. Now, how to get that sound out of a model locomotive in HO? Drag around Motorhead’s backline perhaps?
81F
I have an H0 plastic kit for one but have yet to get round to building it. My initial thoughts are to motorise the tender using a diesel Motor Bogie. However an attempt to do something similar for a German Loco made by the same manufacturer did not fair well as I do not think all the valve gear was intended to move. walkingthedog
Thanks Eric, might need a bigger layout for that 😆
Bulleidboy
I thought that HO gauge loco's would run on 00 track - the new Rivarossi H0 1:87 Big Boy due in August looks a great deal - it's twenty two inches long - would look great coming out of a tunnel on a southern region branch line! walkingthedog
I was referring to the length of two locos both with double tenders Barry. Nearly as long as my longest straight. Need a slightly larger turntable as well.
2e0dtoeric
Need a slightly larger turntable - - that way over-scale four-fingered sky crane would be the cheaper option! You would have fun re-railing it all, though! 😛
LCDR
BBNot a lot of people know that in 1934 R. E. Maunsell proposed a 4-6-2+2-6-4 Beyer Garratt for passenger work on the Southern Railway. It would have 6 cylinders 16" x 26", 6' 3" driving wheels and 100' 0" total length. Needless to say the cautious SR Civil Engineer refused to accept the design except between Basingstoke and Exeter at a maximum speed of 75mph. That pretty well killed the idea. Maunsell retired due to ill health in 1938 and it was left to O. V. S. Bulleid to introduce a powerful Pacific class to take over the heavy passenger duties in 1941. Undoubtedly the Garratt would not be quite as huge as the Big-Boy or the Challenger across the Pond, but in terms of size and power in the UK it would have been monsterous. Only the LNER class U1 would have been comparable.
atom3624
For passenger work? Idea for the trans-Atlantic steamers perhaps? What would have been the 'optimum loading' for that - 20-25 coaches? Quite interesting!! Al.
LCDR
Yes, definately express passenger work with 6' 3" wheels!! Originally proposed for the Victoria to Dover boat trains but the CCE put his foot down very firmly against that. Axle loading was the killer. 209 tons 10 cwt over 12 axles, 19 ton 10 cwt on each driving axle. The total weight of the LNER U1 2-8-8-2 was 178 tons and the LMSR 2-6-6-2s was 150 tons so Maunsell's design was undoubtedly a monster. Compared to a "Big Boy" they would be small, but not by that much. The "Big Boy" loco is 85 feet long plus 47 feet for the tender so 32 feet longer than Maunsell's Garratt, and weighed in total 558 UK tons. (loco only 340 UK tons), close to twice as heavy. "Big Boy" axle load was 30 tons. When you think a "Lord Nelson" was just shy of 70 feet long the extra length of the Garratt would have cause a few problems. Bulleidboy
Will the Big Boy be re released in the U.S. also I expect it will, but this shop H&R Trains and Toys, 7900 49th Street N, Pinellas Park, FL 33871 usually has a Big Boy or two in stock whenever I've visited - which has been every year since 2009, and I will be going next week - I'm on holiday. Buz
Hi allIf you want one of those your going to need at least what the USA model press seems to consider a small layout 😮.Which in the the UK would be considered to be Quite a Large Layout bordering on UN-buildable due to space constraints 😢Basically you would need a properly converted attic where you could use at least 95% of the space for the layout and access space. In all probability you would need a semi spaghetti bowl, multi-peninsula design to totally maximize track mileage even in model form one Big Boy can haul a very impressive length of freight train even with 2 to 3% grades.Unless you have the space to build a suitable sized layout a big boy is a waste of hobby money, that better is spent on other items for the train set 😆.It is nice to dream and ocasionaly have thought bubbles about having massive locomotives and the layout more than big enough to justify having one or two of them 😆.regards John
Jeff Mennell
Buz, there might be a market for ready made Reville model kits. At least having a static version in a 'museum' siding would look nice. But as intimated, I wouldn't fancy making one....too many parts!
Lb101
I have such a converted attic and I am very tempted, if anything simply to impress my son and his mates who are taking an interest in the hobby. This beast would definitely sway a couple to get off there games consoles a bit more (grumpy old dad whinge over). The only thing holding me back is I run DC and I think this thing needs to sound alive perhaps more so than my other locos for max effect of massiveness (only option I tend to do is play loco noises through a wireless speaker via my phone when they aren’t looking, obviously failing to match the sound with what said loco is doing)!
