They're used as background dressing for pop-up photo dioramas and vignettes. First, the Germans. As far as I can tell, the Luftwaffe ground support equipment during the first couple of years of WW2 was supplied by the army. Vehicles were commandeered from the occupied countries, and use was also made of equipment left behind after the Dunkirk evacuation. I have plans to add a variety of vehicles to my German collection, but for now it consists of a single Airfix Opel Blitz 4x4, and three Academy 2x4 trucks. I understand the tanker wasn't typical Luftwaffe fare, so I shall look to replace that at some point.The Airfix Morris CS and 40mm Bofors. I had a pair of these kits for ages, so one has been built in transport mode, and one to go in an ad hoc emplacement. Milicast supplied an indifferent kit for the Quick Firing 3.7in Anti-Aircraft gun. Again, I have two, one to be built in firing condition. The Scammell is an IBG kit.The Standard Beaverette armoured car, from Flightpath.Langley Models made this cast whitemetal kit of the Ransomes & Rapier 6-ton mobile crane. The RAF more commonly used the 3-ton version as well as various Coles mobile cranes, but I had this kit in the stash for years and it needed to be built.The AEC 854 tanker you've already seen. It is accompanied by the Matador Models Albion AM463 3-way refueller.Various small vehicles from Airfix, Flightpath and Ace Models.The Fordson tractors are from Flightpath, as is the bowser at the rear. The Brockway trailers are from the Airfix Bomber Resupply set. The middle one has been modified with some rubber bungee to give a pair of delivery hoses. They're a bit of a fiddle to position, but look the part in a vignette, with an erk filling the tanks on a plane's wing.Workshop and General Service. The Fordson WOT is Milicast, the Austins from resin and whitemetal kits I purchased some decades ago, make lost to the mists of old age!The breakdown and workshop truck is a bodge of a spare body and crane to bits of Airfix crash tender and replacement wheels. The AFS-style Austin fire tender doesn't fit the airfield scene, but my excuse is it's used to cover the domestic and technical sites on an RAF airfield. The big Albion at the back is Milicast, and I pretend its used to provide stores and ammunition to the AA units.The Airfix Standard Tilly was mangled into the light ambulance. The Crossley FE1 is a proper Bitsa, made from all kinds of spare parts. It's got a standby crew as well. The Crossley FWD is from a MMS Models whitemetal kit, and it weighs an absolute ton!Finally, some civvie vehicles. No idea where the little Ford came from. The Austin Forlite is by Ace, otherwise known as the Army Staff Car, and the Dennis Flying Pig is a bash of the Milicast military kit. Such contractor vehicles would be seen around airfields, either engaged in new works or filling bomb craters.So, that's my vehicle collection so far. Still to come are some Flightpath bomb trolleys and another of his cute Fordson tractors. I've also got another Bomber Resupply set to pillage. Heather Kavanagh Posted January 15 Share Posted January 15 I’ve loved making tiny vehicles for years, certainly since I was quite young. I was always fascinated by the details, especially around and under the chassis. When I was into model railways more seriously, I was very keen to ensure the road vehicles on the layout were correct for the period. I’ve still got a drawer full of cast metal lorry kits! That interest has never gone away, and researching the right vehicles to appear in my aircraft photos is just another part of this fascinating hobby of ours. Tour de Airfix Posted February 27 Share Posted February 27 Here are my completed models of the Bedford QLD and Bedford QLT from Airfix’s 2010 tooled 1:76 kit. Many different body styles were designed for the QL chassis and it is the QLD general service truck and QLT "Trooper" troop carrying vehicle that have been provided in this kit. While an impressive set of decals are supplied for a variety of different regiments there is unfortunately little historical explanation as to which to use. After some research and personal choice, I have selected for both trucks the markings of 88 Brigade Workshop (REME), a regiment with whom I’m proud to say my father served. The build and detail in these kits is very presentable for their scale and price, although I did decide to not use the glazing provided due to its thickness. I could have used a piece of clear plastic sheet but thought I’d try an application of Krystal Klear which, although more than capable of filling the required area did, due to the size of the window frame, dry a little bit like a concave lens! Tour de Airfix Posted February 27 Share Posted February 27 A few years ago I used the RAF Bomber Resupply set in an airfield diorama I’d always wanted to build. I based the scene on a squadron of Mk.Vc Spitfires, the first to be fitted with bombs for use in a ground attack role. The tanker trailer and bomb tractor coming into view The fuel truck tops up the Spitfire near the dispersal hut, more a 1940s Battle of Britain scene but I had to include it! A Bofors AA gun and carriage An enemy spy is apprehended by the Military Police A pre D-Day meeting is going ahead behind closed doors, but the US Army, British Parachute Regiment and RAF drivers somewhat give the game away! I’ve also often thought that with all the great FAA aircraft and helicopters produced, how great it would have been to have some aircraft carrier and navy support vehicles. The Reichenberg was robbed from the Heller combo that includes a Natter and I used the Natter boosters to add a semblance of plausibility to the idea of launching off of such a short rail. I still have a couple of 'tragers in the to-do pile. Modelcollect kits are rather good, but they're increasingly difficult to get hold of in the UK. Tour de Airfix Posted April 16 Share Posted April 16 I'm currently working through the Airfix D-Day Air Assault kit and having built the Hawker Typhoon (see the Aircraft section) ... ... next up is the construction of the Standard Tilly & BSA motorcycle. Coincidentally I built these a few years ago as part of the WWII RAF Bomber Re-supply set (the same vehicles I used in my "Spitfire Squadron" diorama I posted earlier in this thread) so I’m having a bit of a Blue Peter moment … i.e. “here’s one I prepared earlier” ! I must admit, I never remember the glazing being so prolific on the Tilly kit with both the screen, dash and driver footwell, and the roof, side panels and doors. What I like about this though, is the fact that the plastic can be so much thinner than when screen and windows are provided as separate pieces and so look very much more realistic. Having recently built more 1:35 scale kits, I also can't quite get over how small these are. Great fun though 😊 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
