YattonPete
Why o why tempt us with a new Centenary edition Duchess of Atholl and then find we cannot get one anywhere? The Hornby website will not allow a pre-order and no retailers will have one. Has Hornby made a mistake in limiting it to only 250 and such a relatively low price when twice as many could be sold at a much higher price/proft? walkingthedog
Have you googled it. I found several taking pre-orders that don't say all pre-orders sold.
LCDR
There does seem to be a massive amount of interest in the limited editions. Some items were listed as 'sold out' early on the day of the annoncement 6-1-20.. Hope this is good news for Hornby even if some of us have had disappointment. One thing about Duichess oif Athol, the catalogue says it has a diecast metal body, the normal Duchesses have a plastic body don't they?
walkingthedog
I think the diecast body is why it is limited LC.
LCDR
Ah thank you WTD, I was fairly sure my Sir W A Stanier was plastic..

walkingthedog
Here's three to be getting on with. They might have sold out but don't say so. https://www.collettsmodelshop.co.uk/product/hornby-r3819-lms-6231-duchess-of-atholl-centenary-year-limited-edition-1948-free-postage/ http://www.burevalleymodels.com/p/17187/R3819---6231-Duchess-of-Atholl-Centenary-Year-Ltd-Edition-1948 https://www.jadlamracingmodels.com/hornby-r3819-lms-6231-duchess-of-atholl-centenary-year-limited-edition-1948/

NWR-Gordon-4
This model is limited edition of 500 models, not 250. These will be highly collectible models when they do arrive on the factory. A lot of them are throwbacks to yesteryear and I can see most models selling for a lot on eBay in the future. I will not be surprised if any of this year's limited edition models sell out through pre-order. GNR-Gordon-4 (HF)
Going Spare
I seem to recall the tender body on my Duchess of Montrose being tinplate. Is that correct, and if so, was Atholl different?GS
Ruffnut Thorston
The original Hornby Dublo duchess locos did have tinplate and diecast tenders... Both "Atholl" and "Montrose". It is the later Hornby Dublo "City" models that have a plastic bodied tender. "City of London", and "City of Liverpool". Wrenn versions also have a plastic bodied tender.... LCDR
The A4 Sir Nigel Greslel / Silver Link/Mallard/Golden Fleece tender was also tinplate, with the undeframe also pressed tinplate so far as I remember. The 8F and the Castle originally had diecast tenders. The West Country tender was plastic.. There was something remarkably substantial about original Hornby Dublo locomotives. Going Spare
Thank you both. Hornby describing Atholl in the catalogue as having had a plastic tender body made me think my memory was failing, again! Presumably cast tender bodies were used on the Castle and 8F to keep the third-rail plunger pick-ups in good contact.GS
LCDR
Yes indeed. The A4 and Duchess tenders were sold in seperate boxes with a different part number D11 & D12 (Triang did the same) but the Castle and 8F were 'permanently' coupled with a single part munber (LT20 & LT25) and there was a lead between the loco and tender connecting the pick-ups to the motor athough this was connected by a folded brass plug which slotted into a socket on the front of the tender (and could have a nasty habit of coming loose!). The 2 rail versions retained permanent coupling but did not have pickup on the tender.

These guys are nice and let you know how to pre-order it by paying 20%cost of the locomotive. https://www.petersspares.com/
