walkingthedog
It's not easy showing layouts on this forum. You have to download the pictures onto something like photobucket and then post a link, hardly worth the trouble in my view. There are other forums where you can post pictures. Modelrailwayforum is one.

96RAF
Back to the OP. Here's a pic of part of my old roundy-round layout prior to being redone as an L-shaped end to end (nowhere near as good but it takes up a lot less room). http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/gallery/image/25369-moni/ I'll take some pix of it now and post later. walkingthedog
Looks good RAF96. I take it that it's based on Wendover international station prior to it being closed to build London's new airport.
96RAF
More or less WTD - until that fake WWII bomb was found in 1962. As shown it was based on how much track I could pack into a given area. There just wasn't enough platform length or logical train arrival/departure possible - each train had to stop and reverse into the station, so it had to go. It also took over 90% of the floor space and I needed the room for other stuff as well as trains.
Yelrow
hi, RAF 96, layout looks good, what size is your baseboard, yelrow
96RAF
Was a 12ft x 6ft x 8ft folded figure of 8 continuous run in a U-Shape, but it took up too much floor space so I had to redesign to this 12 ft x 6 ft L-Shape in 4 x 4ft x 2ft modules: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/gallery/image/57032-limassol-end/ http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/gallery/image/57031-pyrgos-straight/ http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/gallery/image/57029-moni-end/ Not as much fun to watch as a continuous run but OK for now operating under RM. Yelrow
my problem is i have no interest in shunting trains into dead end sidigs. I have presently5 continuous tracks, plus 2 more dcc, plus tt and n gauge, so can run9 trains at once. Having just bought a TGV, now need a longer run, as these things really move, and feel it makes sense to run it as designed. Dcc will allways be a tad restricted, as i have a big 3 rail layout, and do not wish to devalue, by converting to 2 rail. If you look at the forum under layout ,you will see a 50 foot layout. If that was continuous my TGV would be in heaven, yelrow

Come on Hornby you have done some really good things this last 6-12 months and images speak more than words.
Dave_wright_1986
Nice layout RAF96, I plan to have 3 loops with a shunting shed/maintenance in the middle and a large terminus off to the right with a goods siding

PJ_model_trains
I started my layout late October 2013 on 9mm plywood base and after a few week decided it wasn't right for me. I then stripped everything off and started again but this time with 50mm cavity wall insulation on top of the 9mm plywood so that I can carve downwards and build upwards but still have all track on one level. Being restricted for space as many of us are I decided to have my layout 8x4 (which then gained a little to 4'6" wide top half and 4' bottom half nearest camera) on legs over a single divan bed. Not a big layout but..... I wanted to have assorted routes (5 ovals) 3 stations and two sets of 5 sidings. I know I cannot have large rakes of carriages but the layout will give me what I want. - ample running between stations using bye-pass sections to lengthen the runs. - sidings although small I can do shunting and fiddling - a scenic layout that I can craft and enjoy making with a river, a fishing lake, a windy road that rises and falls in level, walling, paths, housing and a small industrial area. A bit of a challenge, yes for me, as I am disabled and am limited how far I can hobble around. I cannot stand for long but can do things in bits and sit in front of my layout and laptop and 'ENJOY' It is early stages yet but here we have three months work, there is lots to do. I am starting at the lower carved out level and gradually working up to track level. I will then start on hills and tunnel at the far end and am working on wiring and switching lighting for a burger bar, cars, street and housing lights and later stations will be built and lighted as well. Here is a few months work. 1 - The layout base over a single divan bed. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/gallery/image/57039-short-of-space-layout-over-single-divan-bed/ 2 - plan prepared with Hornby Trackmaster software http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/gallery/image/57041-140119-plan-new-layout-hornby-trackmaster/ 3 - Cacivty wall insulation, 50mm glued with Copydex and river cut out. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/gallery/image/57042-glue-50mm-cavity-insulation-foam-to-plywood-cut-out-for-river/ 4 - Starting to lay track, cork and track stuck down with Copydex http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/gallery/image/57043-start-to-lay-track/ 5 - Cut out and prepare windy road, station car park and area for small industrial estate. Housing will go on green banked area to right. Lake started to raised area on left. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/gallery/image/57047-cut-out-lay-road-walls-lake/ 6 - 3 months down and it is starting to take shape, green emulsion is only to make it look the part for now grass will be laid in time http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/gallery/image/57053-3-months-done-road-to-station-to-weather/ 7 - Fishing lake is coming together. Reeds now in, Realistic water now in and it even has some specimen carp! Lily's and bull rushes next step. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/gallery/image/57051-lake-island-140120/ Hope you like, comments welcome, good or bad. please bear in mind it is early stages and there is lots more to do. I appreciate it is not for everyone, we all have our ideas and projects that best suit us. This is for me, I have crammed a lot in there but hopefully it won't look cluttered. The control point is the bottom left near the river estuary, if I spill my drink I can blame the river ;-)

RDS
@PJ_model_trains That looks really good so far. My only concern would be that the track seems very close to the edge. I say that because I knocked one of my loco's off the board onto the floor a couple of weeks ago and I don't think my track is as close to the edge as that. Anyway, well done. Graskie
PJ, you're to be congratulated on an impressive imaginative approach. Considering you're disabled and have achieved all that in just 3 months, I take my hat off to you. Well done. It would be nice to see the completed project. And geoFF, yes, great layout, by the looks of it completed.

PJ_model_trains
Phul007 said: Should look really good , I like all the levels and the track is flat so you wont have any issues I have with inclines, (Diesels great -steam not so good pulling more than 2 carriages) My layout is stored at 90% so I don't know how your insulation would go holding on to items. Keep at it and your results will be great. Best wishes. Hi Phil The insulation is stuck with Copydex. First to the plywood then to the underside of the foam, it stuck like a contact adhesive. Once I got the main track in position I then cut 4 pieces of MDF, these were bolted through the MDF, insulation and plywood. My wife and friend or family member lift the board and rest it against the bedroom wall (once or twice a year) so the divan bed under neath can be used. It has been lifted two/three times already, first for DCC Bus, then for point motors and decoders, etc. Even though I have cut out the middle it has not moved. I am currently preparing 15 switches and a transformer plug near the river estuary, these will be linked to a lighting bus I will add next time it is lifted. I am wiring in buffer lights 2 switches, station lights 3 switches (wires only for now stations will be built later but they will be ready above the board) The next row of 5 switches will be for the burger bar 1 switch and cars, 3 on the road 1 switch and 3 cars in car park separate switches. Finally the last row of 5 switches will be for street lights, I have just purchased 10 street lights, gas type lights converted to electric but lit by LCD bulbs these will be on one switch and the other 4 switches will light the houses (wires will be ready hopefully fix in next 2-3 weeks) Sorry to go on! Finally your comment regarding track on one level, this wasn't my intention I was going to have a raised loop circling over the main layout but decided against it. Why did I choose cavity insulation? maybe I am lucky being on the north west coast of the UK. Ground from the lake district down is up and down, hills and valleys but, even as it comes past the south lakes I noticed the railway keeps its level and the ground goes up and down as do the roads. Laying track straight on the plywood didn't allow me to go down, cavity insulation did. Thanks for your comments, I remain humble, I have seen much, much better but, it is early days and I have lots to do. I am currently starting at the bottom and coming up. Hi RDS thanks for your comments. I value everyones comments good and bad. Regarding the track so close to the edges, you are spot on. I am aware of the risks but, I have a plan ;-) The layout will have raised ground at the far end, that means it will have a tunnel and items above it but, it will also have boards on the side. The same applies to the sides, they will be protected. Some will have images of scenery, some will have 1" deep buildings. I must admit though this is in the distance and will be towards the end. Meanwhile I sit near the door, I control everything from there. I can run locos, change lights, stop anyone coming in the room ;-) and call my wife for a brew. I have used every square inch to make the most of the small layout.
