moawkwrd
Was giving my recent second hand purchases their obligatory services today (8F, 4F and 2P, all LMS) but the Fowler 4P turned out a bit poorly. Broken valve gear on one side (sheared off shaft) and a couple hours later I realised it had a split driving gear too which explained the clicking so replacements duly ordered and it’ll sit on my desk staring at me until next weekend I expect. atom3624
Do you plan on replacing a pin in the valvegear effecting a repair, or don't think it's possible? I think I've succeeded once, tried perhaps 4 times. May need to wait, but if 'replacement new' is not available, they generally appear on Ebay - some even in good condition at a fair price. Al. Already ordered from New Modellers Shop - they were only place showing stock of both X9181 and X9178. I don't think it's an easy repair and the replacement didn't cost a lot and gives me an extra set in case the other side ever needs replacing. This is the part that has sheared off: Edited September 8 by moawkwrd
atom3624
Not an easy repair for most - only 'serious modellers' will have the right tools, then it is easy. Good move to simply replace - should be more reliable. Al.
atom3624
Better photo of the matt black 'dusting' onto the chimney and top of smokebox, front of boiler of the 94xx. Photo shows the wheels to be a little shiny, but not that obvious in operation - may leave alone for now. Al.
threelink
Some well worn wagons knocked up from ancient Triang and Lima parts a and household rubbish. More painting needed and three links, but getting there
Rana Temporia
Threelink, I’m not sure if someone has done 3D printed replacement cases for the ones that are always missing off that top wagon. They are certainly getting harder to find. Nothing wrong with these older wagons that make up the majority of my rolling stock, although I don’t think I will ever have enough 16t steel mineral wagons. Regarding the 16t wagons, the Trix versions go nicely and match well with the Tri-ang/Hornby ones but the Mainline ones I got in a job lot are too large. I used to have some Airfix kit built ones which also went well with the Tri-ang wagons but no idea what happened to them. No doubt they will re-appear at some point.
threelink
Hi Rana The cement containers do turn up occasionally in the bottom of boxes at train fairs. The real shortage I find is in draw hooks. I have been reduced to making my own from soft iron wire. As I run the overheight Triang wagons in fixed rakes the hook are not too noticeable. I can't make the links though, so use Smiths The wagons shown are all the open axle box cast mazak variety - it's surprising how well they can be made to look with a re - wheel. I love Triang stuff - it's so cheap : those wagons cost £2.40 each all in.
threelink Posted Sunday at 09:32 Share Posted Sunday at 09:32 Making drawbar hooks for 46 wagons to add to the roster. Not intended to be scale representations, merely functional but not too ugly and able to accept Smiths 3 links. Made in a jig comprising a dressmakets pin and a nail driven into a piece of wood. Soft iron wire stripped out of plant ties feloniously liberated from Her Grace's greenhouse is bent round the pin, pulled tight, bent round the nail and trimmed off. The pictures show the jig with wire bent up, some finished hooks and one in place with links attached.
atom3624 Posted Sunday at 10:21 Share Posted Sunday at 10:21 Making them long enough that the buffers don't interfere with each other around curves I suppose means you have to be careful over points / switches / turnouts ... Nice effort. Al.
threelink Posted Sunday at 10:49 Share Posted Sunday at 10:49 @atom3624Hi Atom. The overall projection from the buffer beam is 4mm so no question of clashing. The couplings work as per prototype and buffer shunting is not a problem.
moawkwrd Posted Sunday at 12:09 Share Posted Sunday at 12:09 Stanier 4P back up and running… still a bit noisier than I’d like especially in reverse but at least it’s running again. Definitely needs a new set of pickup arms as it’s intermittent on the middle wheel currently. IMG_1284.mov
