  1. I find the delays are substantially less than the 'previous edition', but navigation could be a little easier - simple tree at the top of some form could help. Al.
  2. I like the look of the new format, and finding negligible delays, particularly wrt the previous edition, but I don't find navigation as easy as it should be. Al.
  3. Fair enough - admittedly I didn't notice this posting. Thanks.
  4. All good ideas - depends how much 'spare time' I can find. I've a few locomotives I'd really like to repair, and have been sitting around for up to 18 months. I'd been thinking of all of the above, and thank you WatB. Logs and Manifest - I presume there'd be room in the storage cabinets - better not to leave lying around, but plausible. Tea mug - necessary 'tool of the trade', but a potential accident waiting to happen ... and wouldn't be that visible at 1:76.2, but might ... Certainly jackets and the bag - used to see them mounting the 87's with the Thermos, bag and the odd newspaper ... I'd like it 'interesting' but realistic, not cluttered. TBH the problem's that CavAlex 56. It's both so detailed and also so easily accessible. When received, a colleague asked about inserting crew members, and before he'd finished talking, I already had the body off!! That easy. Al.
  5. I'm starting to warm to the new format. The 2-day hiatus took me a little by surprise, but the changes are a good move for me, so far. Al.
  6. I think you're right, just behind the cab bulkhead.
  7. 48151 is often double headed on heritage runs with either Jubilees or Fives. I'm not a fan of front steamie couplings, but there is justification. If it's running on a heritage line, it'll often be on the 'return run', tender first hauling the carriages. Al.
  8. Tis true, distraction indeed. My '56' is an 80's era 'TOPS' model in rail blue. One 'character' I have in the cab already has his feet up on the dash, so the odd paper - or brew, or mobile wouldn't go amiss I'd guess. Putting said items into the coaches is an excellent idea, and definitely something to do, once I get the characters, and decide to start ripping them apart - not the easiest to open up. Toying with ideas basically. Totally agreed WatB in contemporary times, H&S of all facets is imperative and probably the same in UK nowadays. In the 80's and with a 2IC I would guess it was a little 'more relaxed'. Al.
  9. I recently, near successfully too, added Modelu crew to my CavAlex Class 56 cab. It got me thinking what else would / could be typical, without exaggerating .... I turned to newspapers. Thing is tabloids' default dimensions are 11x17" ~ 4x6 mm, and 'broadsheet' dimensions are 29.5x22.5" ~10x6 mm. I managed to copy the 'front pages' from the BBC news section onto a Word document, then decreased to ~correct size. The effect looks OK, but ... don't know. Selection is wide - Times, Financial Times, Express, Mirror, Sun, Metro, Mail ... I reckon the Express is a nice pun and compromise. One or 2 different ones on the dash, black tacked there I'll try. Al.
  10. Sir William tried to standardise as much as he could. I'm certain there'll be plenty of variations, but dimensionally the 8F / 5MT were very similar - wheel dimensions and numbers exempted ... If it's sound, I think all know my opinions ... chuff synchronising would be important to me. To many they seem to accept this 'anomaly'. Al.
  11. I suppose we're studying reasons why quite deeply. Perhaps it's the substantial increase in container transport costs being bandied around which are pushing up prices on what effectively is an established model with a couple of minor updates? I admit, DRC's comments are precisely my own thoughts. What percentage of model costs could be attributed to transport alone? We are getting a little 'Off Topic' but there is a relevance. Al.
  12. Are traction tyres required? Assuming a retool, with 'substantial metal presence' in the body, could a 'modern quality update' without tyres be successful? Al.
  13. Sam's just 'published' a pretty decent appreciation of Hattons' recent years' efforts. Al.
  14. LHS steam pipe - same as sister locomotive Black 5. It does sound like this is a re-iteration of the previously very good super detail, and not a retooling, thus some 'fresh ideas' not previously seen on the locomotives - just the 'extras' required to make it go. Don't get me wrong, it is an excellent locomotive, but ... OK, I'll hold here!! Al.
  15. I love the 8F (and Black 5 of course!). Apart from the connection / draw bar between locomotive and tender, is there anything else fundamentally different between this and the previous super detail 8F already in circulation? Al.
  16. If I'm interested in a model, I'll hunt down 'video reviews' and get ideas - convince myself if I want to continue, etc - and I'll aim for at least 3 or 4 different ones. Carpet Man Sam is my go-to guy, but he does miss the plot sometimes! Al.
  17. Plastic cement I find can become 'hard but fragile'. It MIGHT work by prodding with a pointed object, to fracture it, then you MIGHT be able to ease it off without damaging the original nameplate underneath. Al.
  18. I loved my old Triang Pullman back in 1971, those knurled wheels on the Super 4 track helping it climb slopes up to chair seat height, from ground level - equalled only by Polly, such are the things you do when 10-11 years old!! I remember them changing to the yellow ends option, then the inverted livery as well. During that period up to perhaps mid- to late-seventies which was when I believe they were produced, there was only one blue I remember. Even on my visits to the original Hattons' on Smithdown Road, or Hobbies in Liverpool town centre, that would be the only shade of blue I saw. I do not remember any re-issue, or change of shade around that era. Al.
  19. Not railways, but placed alongside the recently purchased, detailed CavAlex 56 - a HobbyMaster F-35B JSF Prince of Wales. Comes with all flaps, covers, wheels, missiles ... and no installation instructions - possibly online - otherwise just guess where they go!! All detailing is 'push-fit'. Sometimes I have to glue the parts - this one is still push fit only. Al.
  20. Another fantastic, but highly fragile-looking Era 1 locomotive. Well done Hornby. This Era is more popular than many think, with a lot of curiosity being the key. Al.
  21. Remember ... A railway is never big enough ... There's always another .... building, siding, locomotive, wagon, coach ... you would like ... On a more serious note, have a think - unless already mentioned - if you're staying DC or going DCC (Digital). This is a decision you need to make early on ... Operation is potentially much more fun going digital, but it is considerably more expensive. Al.
  22. Already had a photo 'as arrived', now the CavAlex 56 has painted loco crew installed - I'm quite impressed and certainly makes a difference - even if one has his feet up on the controls!! How's the locomotive running? Superbly and very smooth and powerful, despite being slightly lighter than the Hornby one. Al.
  23. I could understand that quite a large area of that 1:1 would be required, at least 2x A4's worth 'though they have got quite a large area there. A little extra before sale would save a lot of hassle later - and despite the extra initial cost, it would long-term probably save them a lot of grief, and their reputation, which still remains a high level. Al.
