I cut the base off and stand the figures on their feet. Sometimes I drill up through the leg and insert a length of handrail wire then plug the figure into the layout. In the cab I just glue them in place.

I quite enjoy ballasting. Don’t do too much in one go and make the PVA/water mix weak, about 20/80. Takes a bit longer to dry but dries more like toffee than concrete, easier to remove later if necessary, and sods law says it will be.
I have that loco BB, DCC unfitted. Have you noticed the late crest on the right hand side is facing right instead of left. I think the real version was the same.
At the Basingstoke show a few weeks ago one trader was selling the Mallard Live Steam set unused and never removed from its box for £475. I’ve seen sets for sale like this quite often.
